suprising results with gold dollar

Hey guys ive been doing the str8 thing for about a month now with a razor from Larry and I recently got a Gold Dollar razor off the bay for $10 shipped from China I believe. Hearing all sorts of mixed reviews I figured I would check it out for myself and after only about 15 minutes of honing and a little stropping this razor suprising gave a good shave. I have a Boker and like I said before the antique one from Larry to compare with. I figure for $10 you cant go wrong here, but thats just my experience, anyone else here have a good experience with a Gold Dollar?

It's inconcievable!:w00t:

A good shave from a cheapo made in China razor?

What would the guys from SRP say?????

(I'm of course being facetous.....I like em alot)

I have a few. I have a stainless one that work quite well. It needs the edge refreshed. I will have to touch it up and give her a go.

Gold dollars work fine. It's unfortunate that this is surprising to you, as it suggests that some peoples' bias against them is misleading others as to their performance.

From what I've seen the "Mixed reviews" mostly amount to a few hundred people saying they work fine, a handful of very loud people saying that they don't, and then another handful of arbitrators who feel based mostly on psychology that ok, maybe they work fine, but there must be something wrong with them or else why would there be such loud declarations against them, and finally deciding that a good compromise is to decide arbitrarily that they don't hold edges as well as X, Y, or Z.

Thankfully, it is just as easy to roll your eyes at experts as it is to roll them at amateurs when they are equally wrong.

Very wise words ^:thumbup1:

I have one, it's heel area isn't pretty and the bevel isn't even on the blade and it has the ugliest scales I've ever laid eyes upon... but the edge is keen and it shaves very well.

Yes, it isn't the prettiest razor ever and it certainly can't hold a candle to the more expensive razors in terms of looks... but it does shave well and it has held it's edge for about two months now.

For the price, I'm happy with mine. It's my designated "travel by air" razor, if it vanishes from my luggage I won't be (too) heart broken.

I keep looking to pick up a stainless one but can't seem to find one. I think it's make a good razor to use when I go camping. The stainless is easy maintenance and I'm not going to cry if I lose it or break it.
