Superior 70 Alcoholado Bay Rum

My local source (Shopper Food and Pharmacy at Seven Corners, No. Virginia) of Superior 70 Alcoholado Bay Rum seems to be drying up. Where once they had 750 ml bottles for around $4.00, now they only have 350 ml bottles for $2.99 and seem to be spotty about keeping any in stock. Also, they have never had the menthol or eucalyptus versions, which I would like to try.

There does not seem to be much on line any more either and it seems expensive, especially shipping costs; small bottle only; no other flavors; etc.

Some have apparently ordered this from Walgreens (where the local store does not carry and the local stores I have been to do not) and picked it up at the store with no shipping charge. Any one had any recent experience? Does this still work? I think I asked once but no one at Walgreens seemed to know anything.

Any good mail order places pricewise/selectionwise? Any other suggestions for DC area?

Many thanks!

Can't help you with the DC area or Walgreens, but if you ever find yourself driving north look for a C-Town supermarket (their website has a store locator). As of last summer they had Sup 70 (plain, small bottle) for $1.99, and Florida Water at that price too. As for mail order, the only one I know is shoeboxshaveshop.com.

I checked a local market today (La Villa Market) and found Alcolado 7Espiritus - looked similar but I think it's got some additional ingredients. I'll have to go back and write down the contents. They also carry Siete Machos, Florida Water, Agua de Ruda, and a bunch of standard U.S. colognes, as well as Gem Blue Star SE blades and Wilkinson Sword DE blades.
I went to another market in the same plaza (24-7 Express Market) and found that they have a separate room full of latin colognes, little bottles of perfume, candles and a bunch of statuettes (all for religious purposes). Next time I'll practice my Spanish and see if they'll let me take some photos. These two markets are at Lake Anne Plaza, in Reston, VA.
Also, the Lakeside Pharmacy, in the same plaza, had a large bottle of Humco Bay Rum (about $32), and Pinaud Lilac Vegetal, as well as Wilkinson Sword DE blades (made in Germany).

EDIT: crappy phone photo of Siete Macho and Alcolado 7Espiritus:

p.m.a.,

I swung by Reston on Saurday and bought some of the Siete Machos and the 7 Espiritos. I will probably submit a longer report on them after a while, but they both seem nice.

The SM is sort of orangey spicey. The 7E Florida waterish with some extra bergamot umph, just as one would guess from the ingrediants list.

Thanks for the tip!

I just recently bought two 11.8oz bottles for $1.99 each at a local Walgreen's. It was located in the "Latin Toiletries" section.

I just saw your post after doing a walgreen search in my area. Go to walgreens dot com and do a search for superior 70. Then "find a store". I typed in 20001 as a zip code and there was a store in alexandria that showed "in-stock".

Go figure. I have stores in Indiana that have stock Pinaud, but never more than one kind. Superior 70 seems to be more hit or miss.

the 7 spirits and seven "gigolos" are used in voudoun ceremonies quite extensively

Any hispanic store will have. I never knew or saw a Latin section in Walgreens, is that a hispanic area of your neighborhood.
I would guess one in 3 walmarts in n.calif have an "ethnic" or "hispanic" section, much higher ratio in southern calif....50% of calif residents speak spanish

Inspired by this thread, I picked up a bottle of Superior 70 today when I stopped in my neighborhood beauty supply store. There were a number of other hoodoo related bay rums, Florida waters, etc., but I didn't have time to sort through them all. The Superior 70 is very nice. As far as I can tell, the fragrance is bay oil and that's it. And it comes in gigantic containers.

Walgreens.com has S70 Bay Rum for $1.99. Shipping is $5.49 Order $25.00, get free shipping.

Get up to 12 bottles shipped for $5.49

Love those 750 ml bottles! They didn't happen to have menthol or eucalyptus did they?

What is it about your area that seems to have the best selection of barbershop type supplies I have ever seen!?

No, they just had the original--but they had it in three sizes.

In terms of conventional stuff (Pinaud, Lustray, etc.), I think it's because there are still a heck of a lot of barber shops around. For top of the line gear, we really aren't very good. When you get past the chain places (we don't even have an AoS store as far as I know), there's only one good local store that I know. We do pretty well for frags between high end department stores and a couple of outlets (especially JR Cigar).

For the more esoteric stuff like Superior 70? That's easy. Hoodoo.

I have all three varieties (Bay Rum, Eucalyptus, Mentholated). They are all fantastic and crazy bargains. I found mine in a local CVS in the Boston area. The plain version has become my favorite bay rum splash and one of my favorites overall. Very clean scent and very soothing.
