Super speed vs flare tip ss

Is the flare tip SS going to be a good starting DE razor for me, or should I stick with the regular SS. I found a really nice flare tip for a reasonable price, but I'm not sure how similar it is to the regular SS?

Yes, it will be just fine, assuming its not a red tip! My first was a flare tip (British made) and I still have it and use it. It will shave just as well as the 40's style.

A flare-tip pretty much IS a regular Superspeed. Not sure I understand the question. Way more of the Superspeeds were flare-tips than were not.

The 40s and early 50s Superspeeds are not flared. The black tip is not flared. The red tip and blue tip were special editions, but their handles are flared. Pretty much all the other Superspeeds are flare-tips; they changed the knurling somewhat on the flare-tip from the 50s to the 60s, but the razors are essentially the same. Some of the later Superspeeds had slightly less domed heads, but they all shave very similarly.

Ok, I figured (from what I read) that the flared was similar, if not the same, but I wanted to make sure it was just aesthetic.

The top two are a '48-'50 SS and a 50's style flair tip.

Its basically just handle design, blade exposure and weight are similar between them.

It may just be personal preference on my part, but the 40's style Super Speed handle feels superior to me with a nonslip knurling. The weight is within a gram or two for those two styles but in general the 50's and 60's Flare tips feel like the are trying to get away.

I have only three Super speeds: one 40s style, pre-date, one Black Tip brass handle, and one Red Tip. The knurling style on the Red Tip seems superior, although the TV Special models look to have similar knurling.

Both would be great as a starting razor. I've just started using both the 40's style and the 50's to 60's style flare tip. They shave very similar IMO but I must say I kind of prefer the grip and knurling of the flare tip. Doesn't seem to slip as much for me. They are both very mild shavers though.... excellent for a beginner.

Actually, the razor second-from-top is not a typical Flare Tip, but appears to be a Flare Tip Rocket due to the pointy end-caps. It also appears to have the heavier head and rounded dome more in line with the '40s Super Speed models.

The regular old Flare tip has a flatter head geometry, which can be seen on the Slims in the picture. This changes the blade angle significantly, making for a noticeable difference in the shave. I like the '40s-style better, but the Flare is a good razor and is preferred by some people.

The second one is not a rocket. It is a rarely seen "British Super Speed" and functions just like a regular American made Super Speed with a non ascending TTO knob. If you notice in the picture the doors are closed and the knob is flush against the handle. I didn't know of the different head geometries between the American and British SS of that era. Interestingly enough my Brit SS gives milder shaves than my 48/49 SS. My Brit has the "II" markings under the head which is supposedly equal to a standard flare tip, not blue (I) or red (III).

Well i have all of them, just never shaved with nine of them :eek:/ Sorry i could not help,

It was fun reading the thread )

Last night I picked up a '53 SS (non flare tip) for $20 with free shipping off of ebay. According to the pics and description it's in great condition and doesn't appear to have any major scratches (for being almost 60 years old) and just a little bit of plating loss on the underside of the razor. Other than that, it looks almost brand new! I can't wait until it gets here!

On a side note, I'll be gone on the estimated delivery date (this thursday) and won't be back until late Saturday evening:sad:. Either way, I suppose that's not to long to wait.

Now for the brushes and soaps!
