Super-Max Platinums - Astra SP alternative

I reached into a bag of sampler blades I received a while ago... and pulled out a Super-Max Platinum that was one of the blades that the sampler had the most of. For some reason I avoided trying one, and included a number of these in Toothpick's blade exchange. Mistake...

The blade is manufactured by Vidyut Metallics PVT. Ltd and made in India. Here's a picture I shameless stole from the interwebs...

This blade is great! I used it in my Slim, set at 7, and at first I had to check that there was a blade in there, even though I was hearing it cut the beard, it was doing so so smoothly and comfortably. It didn't seem to even need lather (in fact, there were times I was going over the same spot and didn't have any lather left). It seemed to take longer and more passes to get as close a shave as some of the sharper blades (feather, Iridium Super, Meds), but it got there without any nicks, weepers, or burn.

Um... Toothpick, can we trade back?

I just got a couple of these from Toothpick as well, along with some Perma-Sharp Supers. Glad to hear you got good results from them, I think I might try mine in my Slim next week. I'm using the Perma-Sharp in my Fatboy right now, and I have to say they work better in it than they do in my Slim.

I don't know how they are different/same but I enjoyed and got great shaves using Super-Max Super Platinums.

I really like the super platinum blades as well, and have a large supply. Since they are not replaceable as best I can find, I think I will order a small number of the platinums and see if they are the same or similar enough.

I like the Super-Max Super Platinum as well as the Astra SP. I found the Super-Max Platinum not to perform as well. YMMV

I tried a couple of SuperMax Platinums given me by my son and liked it so well I ordered a supply to supplement the Feathers I have on hand.

Day 3 with the Super-Max (in a Gillette Slim, set at 7). Close shave, but took a bit more work, and two nicks and a few bleeders. I tend to toss blades after 3 shaves anyway, but this one definitely is read for the blade bank. All in all, a pretty good blade. Perhaps not quite the wonder-blade as the Astra SP, but pretty darn close. Definitely as comfortable and close for two days on my beard. Next up... a Lord (white wrapper, blue lettering).

Who used Platinum and Super Platinum? Could you feel a difference between these blades? I couldn´t. For me they are the same in different packaging.

I tried the platinum for the first time this week. I am on shave number three with the first blade and am really satisfied with the results. I have thick hair and most blades are done after two shaves. This is one of the few brands that can last more than two shaves for me. I am going to see if I can get four shaves with no irritation.

For me, the SuperMax Platinum is a great blade, even better than the Super Platinum. I find the Plat to be slightly smoother, slightly less irritating than the Super Plat.

And both of those are quite a bit better than the Astra SP.

Okay, so I used a Platinum in my Slim this morning. Didn't seem to cut as effortlessly as the Perma-Sharp I just got through sampling last week. Still got a DFS with no irritation after two passes, but I had to work a little harder than usual to get it. We'll see how the rest of the week plays-out.

I purchased 240x Supermax Platinums for $18.99 with free shipping! Excellent and sharp blades that give me 2 or 3 quality shaves on each. I seem to have less shaving issues with these over the Astra SP blades.

Supermax Platinums at the price I paid, are a little over .12 cents per blade x 2 shaves would be about .06 cents per shave (better savings if you can squeeze out 3 shaves).

Anyway, feebay has them now at 240x with free shipping at $18.99 (I purchased them back in the beginning of the year). This is an excellent savings option to other top rated brands out there...Enjoy the shaves!!! :wink2:

I'm afraid these aren't going to work for me. I had my second shave with one yesterday, it wasn't very comfortable, and the blade seemed to be having an even tougher time cutting through the stubble than the first shave. So, into the bin it goes. Life's too short to use a blade that doesn't work for you!

I did blind side-by-side testing with both blades (the control blade for each test was an Astra SP). Both the Platinum and Super Platinum performed well and felt very similar during the shave to the Astra. However, in my opinion, I would rank them as follows for sharpness and closeness of the shave:

1) S-M Super Platinum
2) Astra SP
3) S-M Platinum

I want to buy 20-30 Super-Max Super Platinums, but no one seems to have them right now. And I didn't love them enough to try really hard to find them.
