Super Adjustable - Instructions

I've just bought a Gillette Super Adjustable, and hopefully it will arrive shortly.

This is my first adjustable, and the razor in question comes without instructions. I understand there is a 'correct' way of setting an adjustable - I refer to what I've read about the Progress - involving changing the setting before inserting the blade and closing the silo? Is that correct? I'd really appreciate any information on this, as I'm keen to get the best from the razor, and would not wish to damage it through my ignorance.

Thanks gents!

Keep the silo doors slightly open when you change the setting in a Gillette adjustable and remember to turn the TTO knob a half turn from the fully closed position.

when you put a blade in and tighten the knob it should feel like it's going over the top lobe of a camshaft.
if you want to alter the setting you need to loosen the knob, back it off a bit so you can see the silo doors lifting off the blade
set your new position and then re-tighten the knob.
otherwise you will be adjusting the razor under tension and cause damage

Thanks chaps! So....

What's a TTO knob? Is that the knob at the base of the razor, similar to the one on my Merkur HD?

It is OK to adjust the setting while the blade is in situ?

I have one of these and the only thing you need to ensure is not to adjust them when the doors are shut tight. You can certainly change settings when there is a blade in the chamber but just give it half a turn to open the doors a little before you do so and then tighten up. Its a nice razor enjoy.

The knob at the base of the handle is the door opener (TTO knob), the dial just below the head adjusts the blade setting.

Cheers Tony

I have a NOS Super Adjustable in the box. Guess what, no instructions other than the vague details on the back of the box.

I disagree, this is not required. I adjust with the doors tight, no problems.

TTO = Twist To Open

and yes it is the knob at the bottom of the handle, do it while the blade is still in the razor.
as long as you've loosened it enough all will be well, 1 turn is enough (just checked mine)

it's more impotant to do this when going up the numbers (more aggressive) due to the way the mechanism works but get into the habit

I have looked at the instructions on a variety of adjustables in the sticky and indeed none that I saw recommended loosening the doors prior to adjustment.
So in that case I agree with the disagreement of my agreement.

So you can do what the hell you like.

That's excellent!

'This razor is made especially for use with Gillette Blades' - I assume it takes any standard DE blade - a Feather for example?
