Which suit jackets are in more these days the 2 or 3 button or does it matter?

2 button, always a solid classic. They never go out of style, and are "more in" right now, but it depends on preference, you cant go wrong with either.
Neither one is in or out at any given time; both are conservative and classic. The cuts: Italian, English, or American are what makes a jacket more or less stylish. What you're looking for is a coat that fits you, your height, girth, etc.
From what I have seen, the most "in" (as in cutting edge) right now are single buttons, like you would see on a tuxedo jacket.

Currently, I would suggest a Two-button jacket with side-vents. It's the most common style you're seeing in jackets at the moment. Three button jackets have not been current for some time. They are seeing some return, but not enough I'd recommend one.
2 button jackets with side vents are popular now. You can go single vent as well, just do not go unvented.
Also if you do get a 3 button jacket, make sure its a 3 roll 2 where the top button is never fastened and creates a nice rolling effect of the lapel. It is very ivy/trad and timeless.

I just put a 90s era 3-button sports coat out to pasture.
I have a couple o three button sport coats. I wear them with bow ties because I think too much shirt looks odd with them. I still wear them from time to time because I cannot bear to put a Golden Fleece jacket out of my rotation.
My preference is 2-button. However, the main issue is the cut, not how many buttons IMO.
I also suggest that you take a woman with you when you pick out suits, great to have a feminine eye!
