What's new

suggest some blade pairings for my new razors

so, after a year or so of mediocre shaves with my merkur classic, i've decided that the problem didn't rest with soaps or blades (i've tried quite a few!) - but maybe the razor itself isn't for me. my girlfriend says my beard is medium/thick, and my neck is pretty sensitive. i tend to like it best with less-sharp blades like dorco ST300s.

i've ordered a few new razors over the last week or two and am looking for suggestions for which blades to pair with the following... obviously YMMV but what is your personal preference as far as blades to go with:

gillette flare tip rocket
gillette slim handle adjustable
gillette red tip
gillette old type
merkur slant
merkur HD barberpole
merkur classic long handle open comb

any suggestions appreciated!

I use Red Pack Israeli Personna blades in all my razors and get great shaves. I recently revisited a 7 O'Clock Yellow pack and I might give those a go as well. Give them a try with your Dorco blades. If they don't work, order a sampler pack from one of the online vendors.

I have the same problem and I found my perfect pairing in a Feather and a fat handle Tech using either Cremo Cream or Modspa Avocado. The Tech is not very aggressive but with the Feathers it give BBS with little-to-no-irritation after three passes and a few touch up strokes. I love this combo. The Techs can be found super cheap on the BST.

I would like to jump here on your topic. IF you have sensitive skin or get irritation fast. I don't think the Red Pack will help you. They are more sharper than the ST300. If you like the St300's then you will like the ST301. I usually get a smooth shave, no irritation when I put Subzero aftershave. With Red Pack, I usually get a burning sensation from after shave, i guess since it is sharpter. If you go with a Feather, you will definetly will get irritation due to sharpness. I suggest you order a sampler pack from West Coast to find the blade you need. I looks like not all razors are the same with their aggressiveness so you might play around with the blades and conbinations to find the right ones for you.

Good Luck and Have a great shave!

Rocket: Feather, Red IP, Gillette Yellow, Swede, British Wilks (1990's)

Slim: Feather, Gillette Yellow, Swede, Super Iridium, British Wilks. Derby and Astra, possibly. Crystal works fantastically if you can tolerate the sharpness.

These are blades that I have personal experience with.

PM me if you have ? about the British Wilks.
