Styptic in Australia

Hi all,

Been DE shaving for a few months now and am loving it, but still nicking myself on a reasonably regular basis. I bought a Col Conk styptic pencil from Shave Shed online here in Australia, but have been very disappointed with how quickly it has disappeared. Just wondering if any fellows Aussie can recommend a better option available locally, either in store or online? I was considered getting the Proraso equivalent in a tube, but have read mixed reviews. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated :)

Dan.

I have not had the nicking problem you report, I used to get more cuts from cartridges as I was using them far too long and pressing too hard. :-(

I did try the styptic pencil, although I just got one from my local chemist, but on the couple of occasions I used it I was not really happy. I did buy a tube of the Proraso styptic gel when I put in an on-line soap order so it didn't add much to the postage. Try this link http://www.connaughtshaving.com/000265.html

Styptic pencils are very water soluble. Any and all of them will dissolve quickly if left wet. You just need to barely wet the tip and then dab it on. Patting it dry with a tissue after use is also good practice in order to prolong its life.

Follow this advice and the stick should last a very long time.Clubman sells a huge stick ,if you can find it.

I've been using great styptic pencils purchased in the Shaver Shop in my local Westfield. They stock a few wet shaving products. These are long and pencil shaped rather than short and stubby like others I've seen and used.

I don't get nicked much but I have a styptic for a pretty long time, a few years. As mentioned already keeping it dry is very important. The one I have is pretty thick though, it's a big pencil. Fat. I got it at Walmart I think.

But I typically dab some cold water on the nick then wet just the very tip of the pencil and dab the nick. I then quickly rinse any blood from the tip....just the smallest piece of the tip...then dry it with a towel and put it back in its little tube.

I have been having this one for about 30 years. At this rate it should last me till I'm about 140 years old.
