What's new

Stupid question: how much is enough/too much?

I've really only recently begun wearing scents at all. It started with Aubrey Organics pine deodorant - LOVE that stuff but the local health store that sold it closed up and it's pretty pricey to get off Amazon. So, one day at my barber's I picked up some of his Pinaud selection; liked it. Later found a sample bottle of Bowling Green, liked that too.

But being new to wearing this stuff, I never know how much to wear of a particular one.

Being cautious, I probably apply too little.

Any advice on this?

I'd stick with too little. It's almost a cliché, the person who gets so acclimated to his/her applied scent that he/she overapplies it and eventually reaches the point where the scent precedes them into the room.

I've exaggerated for emphasis, above. I believe that it should be almost subliminal or subconscious, the effect from the scent being worn. More giving the other person a good feeling than the explicit thought of "oh, I bet he's wearing such and such"

I'm sure I'm at one end of the spectrum, but you asked for input.

So, say with something like Bowling Green, if you know it - spray directly on skin? Spray in the air and walk through it?

I'm not familiar with the scent, but the answer really depends on how strong it is. Take Creed's Green Irish Tweed, for example. Being an Eau de Parfum, that stuff is so potent, I don't even spray it on. I hold the sprayer to my wrist, press down so as to "decant" just a little of the fragrance (in other words, I don't let it atomize, but make it dispense in liquid form), then dab it behind my ears and along my collar bone. Anything more that that makes it far too evident on my person.

Conversely, take something like Imperial Lavender by Santa Maria Novella, which is an Eau de Cologne splash. It is much less strong than something like the Creed, and I have to splash on a lot of it to get any sort of staying power at all. When in doubt, though, go easy on it, and seek the feedback of a trusted other.

always err on the side of caution.

for most EDT I typically use one spray (or less). The only exceptions are Zirh and the Mugler which are both very faint scents.

I've found that the wearing of Mandom is a great crime deterrent if you splash it on in the manner demonstrated by Mr. Bronson. Wear enough of it to project to the entire length and breadth of a city block, and any would-be mugger or gang member recognizes it as the scent of someone willing to dispatch anyone with a death wish.

Why do you think Chuck Norris never messed with Charles Bronson? Chuck would smell that Mandom a mile away and run for cover.

Mmmmmm... Mandom.

I do the same thing, but with Dickenson's Witch Hazel... they figure it takes a BAD MAN to go around stinking like that

I have two questions about this clip.

One, why does one wear a cologne that apparently smells like being shot?

Two, why was there not one female in the whole clip?

the actual amount depends on the product and how it interacts with the wearer.

the way to determine it is - it should not be detectable by others unless they are closer than an armlength.

There wasn't a female in the entire series, of which I've counted ten separate Mandom clips featuring Bronson. Maybe they were afraid to get too close to Charles Bronson and suffer the same fate as every single female in the Death Wish series did.

As to your first question, who wouldn't want to wear a cologne that smells not only like shooting, but fishing, dining, riding a horse, sitting by the campfire blowing on a harmonica, catching a fish barehanded, or possibly the most manly thing ever- magical throwing cards (of death):

1-I shoot myself in the mirror too when I use it

2-He's too hot for them now!

Seriously, I'm still worried that he would catch on fire using a pipe with that much AS!

I wonder if Charles is on BaseNotes? Judging from many comments, I think some of the BN-ers wouldn't think twice about bathing in their favorite scents!
