Stropping Contest - See Post #16

The title says it all, Gents!

I don't own a video camera, so I can't post any that I've created. I will borrow two of my favorites though!

From our very own Bart

I think stropping (at least for me) is one of the most important aspects of shaving, right up there with blade angle.

I think it's the most under-appreciated aspects of all straight razor shaving. That's why I want a lot of information out there on it for everyone to consume :thumbup1:

I agree with Paul. While I had limited time with straights, I can assure you that my stropping was one of the reasons I got frustrated (at first anyways). Learning how to do this, without rolling the edge, is paramount.

Stropping has been, by far, the most challenging aspect of shaving with the straight razor, so for me at least, this will be a very helpful thread!

BTW, that tune in Bart's video is awesome! Never heard of John Martyn before, but I wanna' hear more!

I love his selection of music... Now let's see those videos, guys

I have to agree. I defintely knicked up the strop and rolled my first razor. Thank God I got more razors thereafter to confirm that I did, in fact, roll the edge.

Great idea for a thread. Like a lot of things, the key to stropping is practice. The more you do it the better you will become. I look forward to seeing videos as they get posted here.

Nearly every problem I've ever encountered in straight shaving came down to stropping. Once you've got stropping down, everything else falls into place. I'll do a video at some point, but no laughing at my screwed up strop.

Boy we have all been there... Rolled a few edges myself. When I came back to straight shaving after a long hiatus rolled the edges on 2 . Good thing my technique came back...

Thank you Ian. I look forward to seeing it

Uploading to Utube now. I went with a double leather vintage ("This side to sharpen" "This side to finish") strop that I believe has embedded grit on the "sharpen" side. I don't usually use that strop. I'm a linen/leather man, but It's a very convenient shape and size to pick up and start stropping quickly on. My daily setup is four strops hanging from a single loop, so it's very awkward to juggle while making a video. The only difference is I'd spend about three times as long on the linen as I did on the aggressive leather in this video.

I must say, that i've yet to view a stropping video/tuturial, that ive not enjoyed; no matter the method or technique. Many thanks gents, for your efforts. :w00t:

Tony Miller makes exceptional & renowned strops through his storefront "The Well Shaved Gentleman"

Tony has generously offered to give a strop to a member of the B&B! The Stewards have decided the strop will go to the person who makes the "Best New Strop Video"

Anyone and everyone can create a video and post it to the B&B to be entered. We'd like the video to be something new as opposed to something that's been drumming around on the net for a while; you've got roughly a month and a half, July 25th is the cut off and the Stewards will make the final decision for the top 3 and the winner will then be decided by you!

What's up for stake you ask?! A 2" Tony Miller Horsehide Artisan strop with handles, a linen side, and the works directly from the man himself.
Veteran or N00b can post a video of anything they think would make a good stropping video.

here are some ideas:

  • How to apply paste/Crox/diamond spray
  • Identifying the parts of the strop
  • Using a paddle/modular strop
  • Stropping on newspaper
  • Using lapping films
  • X and / pattern stropping
  • Stropping on a travel strop

Very nice gesture by Tony and some good ideas for videos.
