Straight shavers in Japan.

Just wondering if there are any other straight razor shavers in Japan who can hone? I haven't managed to get a razor shave ready (tried Norton quarter set and lapping films) so I was wondering if someone in Japan could do it for me so I know what I'm aiming for? I'll happily pay postage both ways or a small charge if that's required..... お願いします。。。。

You might be luckier in Australia or in the USA for that. Locally, I'm not too sure if there's someone (at least, I do not know one but that doesn't mean it doesn't exists).

Keep in mind that if you go from a 1k grit to a 8k grit, it will take a very very very long time to get the edge right. It's doable but it's really long.

Try a local barber. If he's been there a long time he'll have used a kamisori and therefore might know where to sharpen it or even do it for you!

There is a forum for Japanese straight razor users at thestraightrazorplace. A Canadian, ZethLent on SRP, lives in Japan and maybe would know who could hone for you in Japan.

Where are you located, Bluebriz?

I travel to Japan (Osaka) fairly frequently.

I live in a place called Toyama which you've probably never heard of! (If you think of Osaka and Tokyo as the bottom edge corners of a roughly equilateral triangle, Toyama would be at the top!).
I don't get to Osaka often, although I'll be there next month just for Saturday to Sunday 19-20th January.

I've signed up there, they have some kind of a mentoring system going on. That might be useful for someone as useless as me! Thanks for the tip!

I thought Japanese straights and Feather blades would be easy to find once I got here, but all I've seen is more cartridge types. :(

haha 100 feather DE blades in Japan = JPY 4,800 (US$55). Crazy stuff.
There are straights to be had, but not many and the prices are scary.

OP, I gave up looking for someone to hone my straights here, but I get my kamisori honed here. The guys who do the kamisori won't touch western style straights though.
If you send 4 or 5 at a time it doesn't work out too bad to get them done in the US.

Cheapest I've seen Feather DE blades here is about 350 yen for ten, so about 42 dollars for a 100....still way more than I pay for other blades online, but I do buy them here from time to time as a treat!

I'm not giving up on finding a honer here yet, but if I can't find someone or get the hang of it i'll find someone overseas and do it that way if I have to.

Yeah I thought that too! I've looked for used razors, but antique or recycle shops look at me like I'm mad when I ask them!
