straight razor cleaning while shaving

What do all you straight razor guys use to rinse the razor while shaving? Sponge? Washrag? The faucet? Thinking about getting a sponge for when the day comes and I'm ready to use my straight razor....seen some dude on youtube and he was wiping his razor on a sponge.

I started with a wash cloth then bought a sponge and like sponge better

that dude was none other than the famous chimensch. virile video of straight shaving.
and i use a sponge too, altho i am far, far, far less expert than chimensch.

Thank you gentlemen... now my search for a sponge starts. Right now I'm still in the DE shaving status.....still trying to get my setup perfect....if there is such a thing. One more question guys....would any of you happen to restore straight razors or maybe know someone that does? I got one from ebay that needs some work. The scales mainly.

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
I dabbled with straight shaving a few times (still plan on going at it again) and I preferred the sponge. soaked it, squeezed it some, let it sit in the empty sink, shave, wipe, repeat, rinse sponge off when done. easy peasy.

I just rinse it off in the sink toe down. Used to wipe the blade instead of rinsing it, but my pinky took the whole edge when I wiped. After that I rinse in the sink and dry it with TP when I'm all done. My blade doesn't have any etching and if I start seeing any water spots I can use 2000 grit wet sand paper or Mother's alum polish to clean it up. My pinky will not be a victum again

If you look online there are a couple of sites that restore, but there are also wiki's for do it yourself in the General Straight Razor Talk http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...with-Restoration-Sticky-Redux!-*****Look-Here*****

I think it's fun to do it your self, and you learn a lot. For example I would never have learned if a Wade & Butcher does not have England on the blade then it was made before 1890.

I freehand dog rockets
I rinse under hot running water edge down, toe down

That's what I used to do, and sometimes still do. When I rinse, I also give a careful flick to get rid of excess water, to keep it out of the pivot area. When I don't rinse, I use a wash cloth. Why one? Why the other? I don't know... just do it like you feel it.

I have some really cheap hand towels. Use one a day and as I shave just wipe the blade from the spine side and never use water. I was told by a razor restorer to never use water because you can't get it out of the pivot area. I sometimes will use the towel two days but thats it. Just in the hamper with everything else. Then wipe with some TP and the optional baby oil.
