Straight or DE

hey ive jumped into this idea, and immediately wanted a straight, still do. but i was just wondering what is the difference, other then shape, and what are the benefits or each?

A straight takes a lot longer to get the hang of and ta,makes for a longer shave. However, many feel it is a more comfortable and closer shave. I am just starting to catch up to DEs as far as closeness with a straight. It takes a lot of work. More expensive too. The razor, strop, and honing all are part of the bargain.

+1

Overall, I think the straight razor is cheaper in the long run if you maintain your edge properly but yes, it's more work.

DE vs. Straight? I think it's a preference more than anything...

DE's and straights are completely different beasts - other than running sharp metal over your face there's really nothing in common between the two.

Check out the wiki, there are lots of pictures and explanations of each type to help you get sorted.

Although the razors themselves (straights vs DEs) are quite different, almost everything else -- soaps, brushes and even basic techniques -- are the same. Since DEs are easier to learn it does make some sense to start with a DE even if your real goal is to go to a straight. Almost everything to learn with DE is applicable to straight razor shaving. You will just need to learn the extra stuff for straights. Not only how to strop, but all your techniques need to be very good for successful straight shaving.

Speaking of jumping in -- some people learn to swim by jumping into the deep end (it's how I learned to swim) and some learn to swim starting at the shallow end (how I learned straight shaving). Either will work.

thank you. and very true

I thought i liked shaving with a DE, Then I got a straight and another, and another... The real addiction starts when you start with straights. I dont get quite as close with a straight but the whole sharpening your own blade process has me hooked.

The straight is a little more preparation and maintenance of the blade but many feel it is worth it for the shave and the nostalgia aspect. Oh, and I am in the crowd that are feel it is worth it.
