Str8's good for your skin?

Just wondering - do you think shaving with a straight is better for your skin than using disposable cartridges? I've wondered whether a straight clears off the outer layers of dead skin better than a Mach 3 would, maybe reducing wrinkling. Of course, using the better soaps, creams, and after shave balms also should moisturize the skin better than canned foams might. Any opinions or experiences regarding this?

Comparing to modern disposables, absolutely. Because in a multiblade, each blade looses sharpness at different rates, there is a lot of pulling of the hair before it gets cut (that was even part of advertisement explanations at some poit, so that happens even when they are new). That does no good to your skin.
Not to mention the abrasive feeling you end up with from using multiblade cartridges.

Properly used, with a straight you're slicing hairs clean cut, skin will feel buttery smooth.

That being said though, an improperly honed edge on a straight can end up pulling hair, also, improper technique can give you razor burn. There is no "learning curve" with a disposable.

Actually, I think the benefit comes more from exfoliating dead skin. The steel blade clears away all the dead cells and other junk built up on the surface of your skin, leaving new or at least newer cells exposed, which I think makes for healthier looking skin. Isn't that what all of those "peels" and "seaweed wraps" are about that women get?

Hmmm, single ultra sharp blade that glides across your skin effortlessly and exfoliates the skin....

v.

Horrid dull *** disposable that pulls the hairs out, causes discomfort, etc. etc.

I would have to say yes.

A multiblade system cuts below the outer skin layer causing skin irritation, razor bumps and ingrown hairs. a straight edge and DE cuts the hair clean as well as exfoliates the skin. Bottom line is a smooth shave with no burning feeling or razor bumps

I don't know if it's the razor or the quality soaps, using a brush, etc., but my skin looks better than it has since before I can remember:thumbup1:

Thanks for the replies. Exfoliating is the word I was looking for - I usually do at least three passes with more pressure on the blade against the skin than I used with the Mach 3, so I figure it's exfoliating better. The balms seem good, too. Anyone noted improvement in wrinkles since starting straight shaving?

Yep, I think it is. I even think it's better for my skin than a DE.

When I used to shave with a SuperSpeed, I thoroughly enjoyed my shaves, but every now and again I'd still get a mild case of razor burn. Sometimes some ingrown hairs would pop up, as well. Also, I used high-quality blades (Derby, Personna (red pack) and Feather), but every now and then you come across a bum blade or one that isn't as good as it should be. With a straight, YOU are in charge of how sharp and smooth your blade is.

With a straight, I don't get ANY irritation other than when I was first starting. No ingrowns, either. Once you get your technique in order, I think it's gentler on the skin, as well.

I definitely have better skin since straight shaving. My wife kinda likes me a bit scruffy, but if I let it go too long, I can easily start breaking out if I'm not careful. Shaving every day with a straight, my skin is in better condition than it ever has been.

I think it's a combination of the time/focus, the quality soaps, and the exfoliation going on, but it works.

Straight or DE, yes. I don't get irritation like before, I'm happier, what else can I ask for?

Probably keeps it supple and young by making it work. Same as exercise.

Actually, I'm pretty sure smiling causes wrinkles .

In which case maybe skin stretching does... but you stretch it so many different ways I would imagine it would have to negate itself out. Either that or old straight shavers have faces that look like balled up tinfoil .

I don't recall that ever happening, and even if it did, who cares.

I have some eczema on my face the one part I shave on my right lip is usually fine unless I don't shave for a few days than it gets as flaky as the other spots.
