Still New to Wet Shaving - Best Shave Yet this Morning!

I just started wet shaving earlier this month and have already collected a few razors: EJ DE89, a couple of Super Speeds, and a Merkur 34C HD. At any rate, this morning I used the Merkur HD for the first time with the included Merkur SP DE blade. 3 pass shave and found I have obtained the closest shave yet. It may be that my technique is improving, I've also just started using a Duke 3 brush and, for the first time, used the Proraso Red (Sandalwood) cream this morning. Not exactly sure which of these factors led to this close shave but I'm enjoying it!

Typically I use Astra SP blades so I am wondering if the Merkurs are that much better.

I prefer Astras, they are my favorite blade for the money. I agree that your technique is improving, before long you will be able to get a close comfortable shave with most any blade. Glad to hear it's going well, and enjoy your shave!

Thanks! The only other thing I did differently was add a bit of Kirkland hair conditioner to my beard before my shave.

Good to hear you are having nice shaves.
Don't be too quick to change out your blades.
No blade is better than another.
If you want to try a different blade just because, then do it, but most importantly have fun with it.

I second that congratulatory remark. I do think you should avoid the misleading term "Wet Shaving" as a catchall for the classic / traditional shave hardware and procedure. The canned "goo" does NOT constitute a "DRY" shave. Only electric shavers are used without a liquid medium between the skin and the shaving tool.

Thanks. Yes I need to get my terminology straight. "Wet shaving" includes shaving with a crappy cartridge system (which is what I used to do).

I'm planning on staying with the Astras since I just bought 100 of them!. The Merkur blade came with the 34C razor so I figured I'd give it a whirl.
