Still Dry !

With the winter months being very drying I ditched the AS (aqua velva) and switched back to Nivea ASB (haven't used the stuff in over a year). I have been finding that post shave despite using the balm my face still feels dry and tight. I am really not use to it because for the last few years 95% of the time I worse a tight beard. I started Cart shaving first week this month, and began DE safety shaving for only a week now. I feel this week it is drier than ever. I also have been using Lubriderm 3 in 1 lotion (scentless marketed for AS/anytime/all over). Any suggestions for a good moisturizing product? I stopped using the ASB last yr cause I felt like it was making my face oily, maybe it was just the time of yr. I was interested in trying Proraso pre/post (need to learn more about them before I decide which one) anyone have luck with them... open to any suggestions.

Could pick up some Thayer's alcohol-free cucumber and aloe witch hazel. That's what's getting me through this dry winter. Also, the new forumla of Proraso Pre isn't really that great for post anymore.

I might look into that. Even though it is going to sort of accomplish what my alum bar will do, you think it will add enough moisture, more than a balm?

Alum will dry your face out somethin' terrible if used improperly in any way. That bottle of Thayer's has been my sole source of aftershave/moisture for the past month.

I am still pretty new to this, what way can alum. be used improperly? All I do is keep face wet after I shave, wt bar rub around for a few sec. let it sit and rinse off... is this wrong?

Nah, that sounds about right. You may want to wash it off with soap, though..

Though it has alcohol in it, I find Master Bay Rum leaves my face lubricated for most of the day, due to its having glycerine. Presumably, the other Master AS do as well.

If my face is feeling dry, I put 2 drops of Jojoba oil in my hands and rub my face until it sinks in, then do the aftershave. Adding glycerin to your AS can help too.

444 ASB keeps my face moist for a long time. I don`t use it during the summer time.

Ill give it a try, although I'm thinking that will further make my face dry.
I agree with not using soap. I use alum every morning prior to applying aftershave. I wipe off the alum with a lightly rung wash cloth. No problems with dryness due to alum for me.

I am starting to learn the powers of jojoba oil. This oil should be in everyone's skin care routine.

Back to the OP, I'd look at your entire facial skin care routine. I shave everyone morning and apply some type of aftershave (during the winter I use Floid Blue, Razorock 888 lotion and both Razorock aftershave waxes). I have an oily t-zone. Last fall I started using the oil cleansing method several times during the week which has eliminated almost all of my past oil issues. I apply Neutrogena lotion with retinol mid-day and again at bedtime. Some mornings, I mix up witch hazel with jojoba and essential oils such as tea tree and eucalyptus to help my skin in areas I don't normally apply aftershave. When I stick to this routine, my skin feels and looks much better. When I get sloppy or away from home and miss several days, I can tell a day or two later.

I wonder if you are leaving your face damp when you apply the ASB? As with any lotion, they work best when there is water present on your face.
