Sticking with one razor

I just had a thought this morning while shaving. Perhaps it's best not to change razors. If you find one that works for you, your technique fits with the engineering, and you're getting great shaves . . . then I ask why not just stick with it? I can see perhaps experimenting once in a while to see if you can find an even better shaving experience. Sure, a little adventure. I bought a second razor because I thought I'd like the variety. But it's not like After Shave splashes or colognes. We are performing (what can be called) extremely minor surgery on our faces every morning with an incredibly sharp instrument. I tried my back-up razor this morning and it just felt all wrong. The weight was different, the angle of the blade, different. Why alter my technique? I've got it down to a science with my first string razor, why not just stick with it. I can see getting a ton of variety with the other shaving stuff, AS, colognes, creams, etc. But when you're scraping your face with a razor blade and you've got it down to a smooth, perfect science . . . why change? Any thoughts?

why, why, why indeed..
I have a favorite hammer and favorite coffee cup
I have a number of razors, but I only reach for my favorite one when I shave (mostly) :)
others feel so wrong and give less than perfect results
If it ain't broke, don't fix it I was always told..
seems to apply for razors to me..
YMMV

I think the short answer will be, because we can. Some just like variety. Some like the collecting. Being a expert at many versus a master at one. I have 3 different Merkur razors. I keep going back to the first one I bought and like it a lot. But without the other 2 I don't think I would have improved using my 1st. For some it is like children, each has their own character.

I got my second razor (Tech 1947) only because of it's old age and the history surrounding it: most probably it ended up here during the "Marshall-plan"-period after the 2nd World War.

It shaves great also, but to me it is a piece of history as well.

So it's the story behind it that made me spend € 10 on it.

I don't use my first razor (Feather Popular) anymore since the Tech got here!

Collecting razors is not my hobby though.

Why change? Although change is good muscle memory just doesn't always like it for some. I do change up between my two choices everyweek to challenge myself to be good at whatever I have at hand and might I add its working, I'm having confident near BBS shaves no matter what I have at hand.

I think its entirely up to the person doing the shaving. If you're satisfied with just one razor then thats cool. Sometimes one just likes a change at times. I usually use my 1904 95% of the time, but if I have a 3 or 4 day growth of beard I'll use either my 1904 open comb or my HD open comb. Some shaves one just feels like a change. :w00t:

Wow! very helpful. You know, despite the fact that my first string varsity razor shaves me perfectly every time, I can see the logic in having a second razor be an open comb variety. It strikes me that it would be better in attacking the heavy beard growth we all accumulate on fishing trips, bouts of lethargy, and ill-advised attempts at facial hair cultivation. Maybe I'll look at a Goodfella for just that purpose. But on an ongoing day-to-day basis, I see no reason not to stick with my Edwin Jagger #1.

I tried a bunch of razors and I finally settled on the NEW (England) + Bull Mastiff handle. My other razor, or back up, is an Open Comb Hoffritz. Very different but I get the same results with both.

I never saw a plus value (other than trying something different) to have a DE rotation.

With the straights, well, it changes a bit, I have a few of them but I'm starting to reach the same over and over...

Variety is the spice of life. I like peanut butter and jelly sandwich's, but not every day.

I agree that variety is good in most all things . . . but I see absolutely no equivalency between your peanut butter and jelly sandwich analogy and scraping your face with a sharp razor blade every day. Shaving is an experience (unlike eating or splashing on after-shave liquid) which can cut you and hurt you if not done correctly . . . it's probably the most risky daily activity we do..In fact it's the blood, scraping and pain potential of incorrect shaving that is exactly my rationale for sticking with one razor. When you have your technique down with an activity that is so prone to bloodshed and pain, why do things that put yourself at risk? Why force yourself to alter your technique for different razors, unless you are attracted to pain and the sight of your own blood?:scared:

If a razor is better in certain situations than others I'll use it in those situations. If two razors perform the same for me, I'll use both. I don't see a need for tons of razors, nor to try every razor out there before deciding what I like. But I see no reason to limit myself to one and only one, either!

My normal razor is a '57 Super Speed, but if I have a few days of growth (getting up at 4 am for work kills me hand-eye coordination) then I'll use my '55 Super Speed Red Tip, since it mows it down easier.
