St Louis is a "cool," old town. My older son is at Wash U, and before I came to know St Louis a bit I would have been rather dismissive. I do not know about shaving stuff, but lots of stuff that comes up on B&B there. Food, for instance. It happens to be on quite the river. Biggest mardi gras celebration in the States outside of New Orleans, as I recall. The zoo, the park, and museums. Old stuff, such as old buildings. The rich used to live quite the separate life-style from the poor and it showed more, methinks than today.
If you go to the west side, hit Plaza Frontenac. They have both Saks and Nieman Marcus if you're after high-end goodies. I haven't been to the Galleria in awhile, I'd rather hit Whole Foods on the opposite side of 40.
