squeaky super speed

been using my black handled super speed(F4 so this would be 1985,or 1960 then confused?) and now it's squeaking a little too much and a little rough when I open and close the doors how do I get rid of this noise?

Try immersing the razor into mineral oil. I don't think WD-40 is a terrible idea but it's a dry lubricant that you don't necessarily to want to get on your skin, especially if you want to use the razor. It contains petroleum distillates and contact may cause drying or irritation of the skin. A food grade silicone might be a better choice.

A lot of old razors I buy are pretty dirty and the tto mechanisms are often stiff so I soak them in soapy water made with dish detergent for a minimum of 24 hours. That usually loosens and removes any old gunk that's built up inside the mechanism, plus I think the soap provides some lubrication. And it's mild enough to not damage the finish.

Agree with the oils above, both mineral and baby, though I see no reson to "soak" it - just put it where it needs it. Usually on a SS you can dump a little down the chamber and work it too.

Well..... what'd you decide to do and how did it turn out?

I have a couple of 1978 black handled Super Speeds that squeaked, until I poured a small amount of pure neatsfoot oil down the top and let them sit overnight standing up. I had a bottle sitting around after touching up a few antique strops, and I figured, "Why not". They are mostly display razors, but I have used them each a few times after the oiling and they still twist open and close as smooth as the day they were made. I don't know how "safe" the oil is, but I seem to be mostly alright:letterk1:
BTW, if you look close at the dating chart, you will notice that the black handled SS didn't start until 1966 (also the last year of the flair tip SS), so the only option remaining is 1985 :wink2: (Whoa, Doc. This is heavy:lol:)

yeah I figured the original owner called it a 1960 though wanted to double check. It's an F4 so pretty close to when they stopped production I guess. one year less and it would be my birthyear razor:001_cool:
