What's new

Soap user: Proraso Red opinions.

I've shaved with soaps exclusively for about four years now. Tried maybe a half dozen creams I've gotten as samples and never been too happy. Always bowl lathered them. Always got lather that looked from a distance as good as ANYTHING I can make with soaps. With many of the creams, I got this lather in literally seconds (one to two flicks of the wrist and I've got cool-whip lather). Problem always seemed to be:
A: Lather was airy up close... lots of tiny, but visible bubbles... and it almost crackled like a bowl of rice crispy treats. No matter how much water, always felt dry to me. This likely related to...
B: Far less slip than soap lathers.

Well I looked at ingredients lists and most of the creams I saw used myristic acid as the primary "bubbling" fat source, rather than simply coconut (which is about 2.5 parts lauric for every part myristic). So I looked for a cream that used a "soap" recipe... forgoing the extracted myristic for whole coconut fat. Proraso fit. It didn't hurt that it was quite a popular and well thought of cream on top of that. And when the red came out with the divisive sandalwood scent, I was sold.

First the scent.

It's very pleasant. The people who called it Sandalwood straight up were probably right. It's Sandalwood fragrance almost as heavy as taking a whiff right out the Jug of Fragrance oil. I really like it. But like the people who complained (hippy's armpits, wet feet, etc), it's not going to smell like a sandalwood containing or even based perfume any more than smelling fresh rubbed leather at a leatherworker storefront will smell like "English Leather". If you like Sandalwood. Straight up, unadulterated. You'll like this scent.

Performance... was actually pretty damn good. I made a point to face lather this one. The lather was solid and lacked nothing really. It wasn't quite as slick as my favorite soap lathers, but it wasn't sub-par either... and I'd buy that with a little practice I could improve that aspect. Good shave overall. I aimed for exactly pea-sized amount, and I think in the future I'd go a touch heavier... the brush was pretty much tapped when I finished my third pass, so If I wanted a fourth pass or some touch-ups I might have been in trouble.

That said, a rough estimate on product says I'd get 40-50 shaves out of the tube. More of a guess than anything, but looks about right from eyeballing the stuff. Which puts it on the pricey end of things (Compare to a tabac puck... ~same cost, 100-150 shaves), but I still wouldn't call it expensive, and maybe I'm way off on uses. I'll know in the future, since this will be staying on my counter. Unscented I'd pass on it, but the performance is fine, and damn that smell just makes for a really pleasant shave.

Thanks Ian! Like you, I am a soap shaver, but it certainly sounds as if this is worth checking out.

Thanks for a great review. You really got me interested in trying Proraso Red, even though I am a bit reluctat to it, due to the fact that I got a (big) tube of Proraso Green new formula (and dont shoot me, but I cant stand the scent.) Performance wise its a good cream, but I cant understand why everyone is praising it (Green).

Anyway, Proraso Red - Sandalwood got bumped up some notch on my wishlist.

"I aimed for exactly pea-sized amount, and I think in the future I'd go a touch heavier..." - Yes, Sir. More Proraso cream on the new versions seems to be the trick. It gives a creamier and thicker lather in the soap-style. By the way, very nice post Ian!

What you noted, which I have highlighted in red, is the reason why I started to face lather solely now. I simply could not generate the same thick dense yoghurt like lather from bowl/scuttle lathering as I can from face lathering.
Since going the face lather route I now get a far better & thicker and denser lather - which I guess resembles what you get from a soap much more, than it resembles what you get from a bowl.

If you want a cheap shaving cream that will be as slick as the slickest soap but still will not cost you an arm and a leg, try this - get a tube of Speick shaving creams and a tube of Musgo Real shaving cream.
Mix them in 1:1 ratio, massage them directly onto your beard area with your fingers so you have an even coating, then dip your brush in water, shake it a bit and start to massage in circles - and you have a thick & dense yoghurt like lather in 2-3 minutes time, which will cover your entire face and provide you with an excellent shave.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not likely to ever bother using two products for a lather to be honest. I was a bit curious if the bowl was my problem, and I've still got a number of shave soap samples kicking around to try face lathering with later and see how much of a difference it makes with them. It'll have to wait a few more days to happen though.

Update after five uses.

I can't raise any complaints about the lather. It's not the best possible lather out there, but I'd have a hard time finding five soaps that could beat it. Definitely a great cream that holds as much water as many high quality soaps do. If anyone has any recommendations for creams that work JUST LIKE proraso red, I'd like to hear them.

The scent is just a hair less of a love affair as before. It's still amazing, but it fades a bit quicker than I'd like. Give me 30 seconds more of that first burst of scent while lathering, so I can get into my third pass before it fades and I'll be happy.

I'm using twice what I used my first attempt and my badger brushes are turned into a ball of lather with some badger hairs hidden somewhere within. I need to ease off it a bit, but it's pretty funny seeing that white haired ronald mcdonald on my counter where my brush used to be.

Use...40-50 out of the tube is still looking like a reasonable estimate, but a few more wouldn't surprise me either.

Ian, did you try the new Simpsons Luxury shaving cream? As you, I'm a 99% soap user, but once in awhile I like to palm lather a good cream. Proraso, Simpsons, T&H Ultimate Comfort and Castle Forbes are my favourite. All very solid performers IMHO.

I looked at the simpsons and may grab a sample of it. Haven't tried Forbes, but if Gary has samples I may get one of that too. T&H was nice (got a baggie of samples free when I bought a Chub 1 from them a year ago), but didn't give me as nice a lather as the proraso does.

Thanks for the recs.

Nice post! I also use soaps primarily. But I love proraso red! At first I wasn't fond of the scent, but now I can't get enough of it. I hope they make an after shave balm with a longer lasting scent.

I really liked everything about Proraso Red, but my skin did not. I'm glad it's working out for you.

I did only try it once. Maybe I'll have to get another sample just to make sure.

I'm a big fan of the Proraso Red. Most nights just before bed I unscrew the cap and take in that nice sandlewood aroma, ready for pleasant dreams and the thought of tomorrow mornings shave....

I just tried The red from Garry.. I had a sample. First time, lathered well, good slickness, good cushion, and I ended up having a great shave. Scent was nice.... not over bearing. I didn't care for Proraso Green.. not a fan of eucalyptus... reminds me of vics vaporub. I did notice a cooling affect while lathered.... light menthol? Definately not overbearing but enjoyable. Two thumbs up for me. Now to buy a tube. Does Bigelow sell this one too? It is found locally that is why I asked.

Someone mentioned in another thread that Sandalwood has a similar but muted effect to Menthol. I haven't seen it show up as Bigelow. Maybe at some point it will?

This was the first Proraso product I've ever used, and I loved it. I actually did a test where I lathered it up and put it on over a totally dry beard. It softened it right up, and if I had wanted to shave it off right then, it would have been effortless. I have to get more of this week, but this time I think I might try the shave soap instead of the tube cream.

my brain goes "thonk"
I have a tub of Proraso sandalwood I got from someone here who didn't want it. I wanted to see what Proraso was all about so I got it. I usually load my brush out of the tub and than make a lather on my face. I usually use to much lather and I only used proraso red a few times. I will say the shave was more enjoyable than I thought it would be. My face was soft and smooth.I liked the fragrance as well. It's not like AOS sandalwood, but I still like it. All in all I have nothing negative to say about Proraso sandalwood shave cream. I really enjoyed my shave with it.

I have a tube of Proraso Red (sandalwood) and think it smells good and performs well. The reformulation, presumably to get rid of parabens, boric acid, etc, smells a little different in all scents I've tried.

I used my Proraso Red from the tube this morning, after not having used it in a while. I get a creamy, slick lather, but not quite as slick as a soap. It is a top notch cream, in my humble opinion, perfect for those mornings when I'm in the mood to use cream. I also like T&H and Castle Forbes, too.

The sandalwood scent is wonderful!
