Soap Recommendations

I think I might be getting SSAD. I have the urge to try some soaps out. Since winter is coming and my skin does get dry in the winter, I was thinking of trying out a couple of the moisturizing soaps. Out of the following list, which are worth trying out?

IK
Provence Sante
Pre de Provence
Tabac

The water where I live is extremely hard and I have heard that MWF does not lather well with hard water. Also, I am a huge fan of Musgo after shave balsam and would like a soap that compliments it well, that is until my acquisition disorder spreads to aftershaves. I would also consider any other recommendations not on the list.

All 3 are worth trying but of the 3, I prefer Provence Sante. I use Provence Sante and MWF during the colder months because of the their moisturizing properties.

I'm convinced that water hardness is not the culprit for reports of MWF underperformance. You should try it--it's a perfect winter soap. Barring MWF, PdP is next on my list for winter, although IK is similar and preferred by some. The PdP scent is quite sweet, so that may be a factor.

I go back and forth with MWF.

I gave up on it for months, convinced my water was at fault. Yet, a few test lathers every now and then produced great lather (unfortunately not when I planned on shaving). I have had good shaves with it though, even when the lather does not look optimal.

I think the key with MWF is brush/technique, coupled with a very narrow water ratio. All three have to be in sync to get great lather.

For me, this does not happen often enough for MWF to be a regular soap.

I bought a second puck to persevere with, but I doubt I'll buy another.

Tabac is MUCH easier to lather, however I wouldn't say it was particularly moisturising. In fact, I don't feel many soaps are - just that some dry much less than others.

I too would love to try some of the French soaps - are there any UK vendors of IK etc?

Do not overlook Mama Bears, great skincare and not drying at all (not to mention the scents!)

Pre de Provence is pretty moisturizing, so it gets my #1 recommendation.

I haven't tried IK; so I can't comment on it, but the other soaps look good, except for Provance Sante … the version I tried had talc in it :confused1 It was a little drying too … I wouldn't recommend it, although the scent was nice.

Finally, I have to plug Col Conk Amber -- because I think it works well, inexpensive, and it's under appreciated.

Provence Sante is a fine soap for winter months and provides great skin care due to the ingredients. Cella is also a great winter soap. Unfortunatley for me, while I get great shaves and love the scent of Tabac, it leaves me a little on the dry side during the winter months.

Thanks for all the recommendations and advice. I think I will try the Cella and one of the French soaps. I may also have to try the Tabac since Tabactober starts next week.

VDH Deluxe. Seriously. Contains Aloe Vera and Shea Butter. $1.50 at Walmart and lathers very easily.

I will be doing some grocery shopping tomorrow. I will see if they have the VDH deluxe. For the past 10 years I have mostly been using Williams.

I'd recommend getting the Tabac first as you should have a visceral reaction to it and will either love it or want to get rid of it (I love it). Then you can move on to the others. Pre de Provence is on my list to try. I like the smell - very fresh - but haven't bought it yet.
