So I won this razor on ebay; or, a moral dilemma

As the title states, I won a razor on ebay. A worn Aristocrat for the hefty sum of $1.25. I was the second bid, with one a few days before.

A few minutes after the auction ends, I get a "request to cancel this transaction" because the seller cannot find the razor and it was an old picture. :crying:

Here's the dilemma: should I trust that the seller actually lost it, or just doesn't want to sell it for the selling price? :confused1

I looked at the seller's other items. There are about 100 active, with about 40 completed in the last 10 days. Lots of stuff for someone to keep track of. Maybe he lost it.

However, why would they not cancel the auction after the first bid if they didn't have the item?

So, opinions please.

PS- I've been on ebay long enough to have been burned once or twice :wink2:

IMO the price was much too low for the seller perhaps, the only way you can find out is to watch the seller and see if that razor gets reposted.

Bottom line is that it's the sellers responsibility to provide the product and give an accurate reserve, otherwise we'd all pull our low selling sales with excuses.

Then again it might actually be a mistake on their end and there's nothing that can be done through either compensation or getting an aristocrat.

I'd probably let it go, as how can you force ebay/seller to give you that razor?

Aside from saying you are willing to wait for him to find it what option do you have other than letting it go?

I'd make a complete backup of the listing and all associated details and wait 90 days as its likely if he does still have it he will wait for ebay to delete the old listing before putting it back up. Then if he does report it.

A guy did this to me before (for an article of clothing that sold for $0.99), and then reposted it a few days later. I gave him a negative feedback because I felt that was completely unethical.

Man, I'd be sooooo tempted to bid a couple thousand on the relisted item and then claim I lost the dough...:001_tt2:

Yep, that seller is pulling a weasel maneuver. Definitely back up your info and sock it to em when they try to re-list later.

Some people really need to be taught a lesson.

doesn't want to sell it for the selling price? :confused1

You could try this approach:

Contact the seller. Tell him you're sorry he's having trouble locating the razor. You're happy to give him three days to find the item. You will paypal him as soon as he lets you know he has found it. Unfortunately, if he can't find it, you'll have to file a fraud report with ebay for listing an item he does not have, and leave the appropriate negative feedback.

If you don't really want the razor that much because you don't like doing business with someone so untrustworthy, and you worry he won't send you the same razor you won, then just contact ebay now, and let them know you feel you are the victim of fraud.

Your response depends on what you want the outcome to be. Do you want the razor, or do you want ebay to be told of the fraud? Even if you let ebay know, they may do nothing, since you can't PROVE the seller is lying until he re-posts the same razor.

Good luck, and sorry you have to deal with this.

I think this is a sensible approach - unfortunately, e-bay doesn't care about purchasers getting screwed.

I'm sure he'll be posting it again for sale. Keep an eye out Save him as a favorite seller so you can keep an eye out. When he posts it again report him to eBay. Keep a record of the transaction that he request to cancel.

I had this, I won some Airborne titles at a realllllllllllllllllllllllly good price and the woman just said sorry you can't have them..... I said why not she said: Too cheap... TS I said and contacted ebay; their response: Sorry, we can't make her sell you the item...... so this BS about it's legally binding, only when ebay's money is involved otherwise they don't care............

I'd have a go, but don't get your hopes up..... sorry....

Tom

Thanks for all the responses.

It's a sad time when you can't even trust someone with 2300+ 100% positive feedbacks.

This is the method I have decided upon. Thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't want to deal with a seller like this at all and would forget it all together. I wouldn't give them my money and trust they'd even send the razor or that it would arrive as advertised. There are plenty of good trustworthy deals out there, I don't need to worry about some scammer.

And, as an earlier poster said, eBay could care less - esp. in a case like this where they're saying they can't find it...even if they do repost the razor, all they have to say is they located it later and how can you prove they're lying. So I wouldn't waste energy pursuing it from that angle either, life's exciting enough without adding unneeded drama.

I agree with "DSB"s post. I would add an offer for an exchange. Perhaps the seller is honest and has lost the item. If so the seller should be willing to make a fair trade. Hopefully, they have something else you would want.

+1 Ditto on this.

Well now I should have waited another 10 minutes for your post.
