What's new

Snake eating a fish.

I took these photos while backpacking The Lost Coast Trail in Northern California. It remains one of my favorite natural moments that I've captured on film.

That's cool. It reminds me of this time my dad found a garter snake trying to eat a leopard frog out on our lawn when I was growing up. He wasn't sure what it was when he first spotted it, and thought he might have discovered some new species.

Was the fish dead when the snake found it? Or did the snake catch it alive? Cool pictures. Thanks

The snake already had the fish when I first saw him.

My buddy had gone to the stream to fill his water bottle, and saw the snake (without the fish). My buddy came back and told me about seeing the snake, so I grabbed my camera to take a photo. The stream was about 100 yards away from where I had put my pack down. When we got to where the snake had been, we saw it as depicted in the first photo. The fish was still alive, but I didn't see the circumstances of the capture.

We didn't want to stress the snake out or cause it to drop its lunch, so we let it slither off between some rocks with the fish, and didn't follow.

It was a great nature day.
