SMN, Floris, Aqua Di Parma, & Penhaligon's users - A questions

For those of you who use aftershave splashes from Truefitt & Hill, Santa Maria Novella, Floris, Penhaligon's, and Aqua Di Parma...what's in them besides alcohol and fragrance? What I'm trying to figure out is whether they contain any skin goodies like glycerine, propylene glycol, or other botanicals like Proraso, Dr. Harris, etc. or if they are just alcohol and fragrance like Trumpers. Any insight would be helpful.

Floris uses witch hazel and glycerine. Penhaligons as are balms as is adp.

Some Penhaligon's are as splashes. I have a bottle of Castile after shave that I use on occasion. I understand that English Fern also comes in an after shave splash.

The Pen's BB/EF splashes are nice but don't seem to have that many goodies. Burn pretty good going on. SMN, on the other hand, had a lot of goodies. Consistency reminds me of Musgo, although not as thick. I don't have the ingredients in front of me currently, otherwise I could give you a better answer.

So to summarize...

T&H and Penhaligons are basically like Trumpers and are all alcohol and fragrance.

Floris and SMN have face goodies like glycerine and witch hazel.

AdP...no one knows.

Did I get that right?

That's a great question. And to take it a step further, what about all the fragrances screaming at us when we walk through the men's department at Macy's or Nordstrom's, or any of the big department stores. It seems to me they are all nothing but alcohol and fragrance too. Am I wrong or are there any of those with some good "skin goodies"?

Here is what the label on Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet AS splash says:

Alcohol denat., aqua (water), Hamamelis virginiana (Witch hazel) water, Glycerin, Parfum (fragrance), Diethyl phthalate, Limonene, Linalool, Menthol, Citral, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Evernia Prunastri (Oakmoss) extract, Evernia Furfuracea (Treemoss) extract, Benzyl alcohol, Citronellol, Coumarin, Benzyl benzoate.

Wow! I'm impressed. Sounds like some good therapeutic ingredients for the skin. I may give it a try. What is the fragrance like? Spicy? Sandalwood? Oceanic?

Or a list of nasty chemicals and plant extracts, guaranteed to give you either allergy or cancer. Or both. :001_smile

Check out the reviews section for more in-depth information (that's the cologne version, but scent-wise the AS is pretty much the same, with a hint of menthol). My short take on the subject: Citrus, pine and some black pepper. Some people say it smells like you splashed yourself with Pine-Sol and, while I have no idea what Pine-Sol smells like, I can certainly understand the associations with cleaning fluids.

Indeed it is citrus, pine, and pepper. Smell is nearly identical to the EdT. Refined and complex, and IMO nothing like Pine Sol. I find that it goes on pretty lightly and isn't particularly nourishing for my skin. It also burns quite strongly going on -- if I didn't see it in the ingredients list, I'd have no idea there was menthol in it. So, in essence, a light splash that is nice for the scent (VERY nice), but there are many others that are more nourishing.

I'm still kind of new at this so I'd appreciate knowing what some of the other ones are that are more nourishing and have a great scent? Any recommendations?

I have the SMN non-alcoholic and the ADP. While they both appear to be very similair, the ADP stings me so badly that I'm not sure I want to use it anymore. The SMN seems to be just right. I may try the Pen's BB because I like that scent.

they have witch hazel, among a few other goodies. it is a "classic" aftershave, but it is more nourishing than you might think.

I have used the Floris JF Aftershave splash for over 2 years and when you use it, you can definately tell that is has some skin care properties to it. Not simply a high alcohol content fragrance alone. I'd reorder it as I have finished the first of two bottles I own. I enjoy the traditional American standbys such as Old Spice, Velva, etc as well. The Floris to me is better on the skin for me at least and is worth the premium price point.
