Smith and Wesson Shield 9mm

Anybody got one yet? I have been contemplating trading my CCW Springfield XD subcompact 9mm in for one. Goods? Bads? I have a full size M&P that I love. How does it compare?

My wife loves the handling of this gun, perfect fit for her hands! The fit and finish is very good, the few reviews I read (like on TTAG, or NRA magazine) were very good.
I will surprise her and get her one after she gets her permits, hers take much longer than mine....

Looks like a sweet little gun. Im currently considering the Kahr CM9. Didnt know about this gun till you posted about it. They both look to be around the same size and price. Ill have to check this gun out.

I had never heard of it either till i saw a post on another forum. The way it was explained to me is that is it just a skinnier version of the M&P compact. If you have never held/shot a M&P, the first time you do you will be in love.

I just went to their website to have a look. It seems like an interesting firearm. I think that the size looks like it would be good for me, should I ever choose to carry a concealed weapon. I've shot a couple concealable weapons before, namely the Ruger LCP (which I was not impressed with) and a Bersa Thunder .380 (which I liked, but it seemed a little old fashioned). This is one of the first that I've looked at that I would give any thought to perhaps owning. The price looks quite good to me as well.

I've got a Glock and I've fired a Springfield XD. How does the M&P line compare?

Sorry for straying off topic but its something the OP might be interested in. Have you seen Springfields new single stack XDS .45 that is coming out? Looks pretty sweet. Id prefer if they made it in 9mm too but looks like a great carry gun.

I would like to get my hands on one in .40

Should make a good little gun.

I debated whether to buy the Shield or the new Beretta Nano, and after holding/comparing both decided on the Nano. (They were within $10-$20 pricewise when I was ready to purchase.)
When I took it to the range for the first time, the guy shooting next to me had a new Shield, so we were able to handle and shoot each other's pistols for comparison. The Shield was nice, but the Nano is slightly smaller and has smoother edges and corners for easier concealed carry. I found the triggers to be comparably smooth, with the Shield's slightly edging out the Nano's, and overall just felt that the Nano seemed slightly better built. (He felt the same way about his Shield, so we were probably not being completely objective..) As for accuracy - the guns seemed pretty well matched.
At the end of the day, he'd had 1 failure to eject from the Shield, while I had no problems whatsoever from the Nano - both of us having put about 200 rounds downrange.
Overall, I really like the Nano, and find it really easy to carry and conceal.

I'm going to take a long look at this one! I carry a 9mm (or sometimes a .380) when I can't comfortably hide my .45 - this single-stack XD looks pretty cool.

I have a XD subcompact right now and just don't like the ergonomics compared to a M&P. And I also want to stay with a 9mm to keep all my pistols with similar ammo. Springfield also has a single stack 9mm coming out later in the year for anyone interested.

Walther PPS in 9mm is usually on my person. Great slim carry option with a nice grip size. Trigger is exactly like a Glock. Doesn't print under a t-shirt. Not too small, not too big. Just throwing it out there.

Edit: Looks like the shield has a thumb safety. Deal breaker for me on a striker fired gun.

After getting used to the manual of arms on a full sized Glock (17), I find the transition to a G26 easy. Since many folks find those guns too thick, I would say the easiest thing to switch to is PPS. Both are superb, proven weapons with similar trigger characteristics.

Being a rather large individual (translation: Rotund) I carry a Sig P229 .40SW in an Uncle Mikes inside the pants holster. I've never had a problem with it printing and this thing eats up whatever ammo I've thrown at it. I would like to get the .357 Sig barrel as it seems an interesting caliber & uses the same magazines. I looked long and hard before I bought a carry piece and when I checked out the P229 I knew I had found the one. They are made right here in NH over in Exeter so if it ever needs repair (doubt it ever will) they are about 45 minutes from the house.

Now I've got to go check out these Smith & Wesson's and Beretta's.

I agree but the safety is passive. Won't bother me one bit to carry it safety off, still has the trigger safety. Would be just like carrying my full size M&P.

Agreed. The manual safety is just silly. If anything it will get you in trouble in a moment of stress. I'm sure it's a good gun. I liked the M&P's I've shot.

@MilesTeg. Bingo. My other carry is a G19. If you are going to carry something that thick, might as well have some capacity behind it. I don't find the 19 to be all that big anyway. Essentially the PPS is my t-shirt gun and the 19 requires slightly more clothing before I feel comfortable that it won't print. My brother in law, a state trooper, uses the 26/27 as a chest pocket gun for when he's doing detail in a cruiser. That makes a lot more sense to me in that it's easily reachable and compact. He's a lot more likely to need his weapon than I am.

Just sold my S&W .380 Bodyguard (just couldn't deal with that cartridge) and was planning on replacing it with a 9mm Shield. Sadly every brick & mortar gunshop and online dealer I have checked with had them backordered for some time. Guess I'll look into a Ruger LC9 and Walther PPS as both seem to be well-regarded 9mm firearms in the size I'm looking for; Ruger is a few dollars cheaper as well Now I just gotta figure out what to do with my leftover .380 magazines and ammunition.

In Massachusetts we have to wait til it gets approved by those who we elect and look out for us :cursing: - sorry, not trying to rant on gun rights/laws or high jack the OP - just a FYI why you won't get an opinion from most of L.T.C. Massachusetts residents on this model from S&W and many many others !
