Slick vs Cushion?

Can someone fill me in on which is which and what the desirable qualities of each one are? My understanding is that a hard soap provides cushion, and a glycerin soap is very slick. I haven't used a glycerin based soap yet, so maybe I'm not fully understanding the slick part of the equation, but I thought that's what the skin food was for. Am I wrong?

Soap is slicker, creams are cushion-ier. I believe this is the general consensus. Straights vs safety razors = soap vs cream. I use tallow for everything, though--offers a slick lather, but not as bountiful/overflowing as my creams. I haven't used enough glycerin soaps to make an opinion, but they will make a thicker lather because tallow retards lather building (to a degree).

This is more or less how I think of it. I believe I've read those using straights tend to use soaps for the added slickness, but I've never read that those using safety razors generally prefer creams. I almost exclusively face lather soaps, most because I never learned to get a sufficient lather from cream in a bowl. Most of my preferred soaps are tallow, but I've got a healthy selection of Mama Bears and QED that I use from time to time. I struggle to find a difference between their lather, outside of glycerin soaps having a broader range of stronger scents.

+1 , I would also add that the lather from a tallow soap is much denser than the creams and also doesnt dissipate like the creams do.

I also face lather, exclusively with soaps. I'm just not sure what the difference between slick lather and cushioning lather is. I use a DE, not a straight, yet. I'm just trying to get a handle on the lingo I think.
