slantbartastic

After exclusively using the HD for a few weeks, Sunday marked my return to the slant bar. WOW! I forgot what a fantastically close shave this baby gives. I get a great shave from the HD, but the shave from a slant is so close it's almost spooky. Here I sit, 16 hours after my shave, and I have only the faintest of stubble along my jawline and under my chin. Very nice!

Posts like this are killing me. I'm trying to save a little money here and there and this is really pushing me toward buying a slant bar:biggrin:

Who sells a slant with a long handle?( the B & B brush better hurry up and get here!)

Marty
Hi Marty,
Unfortunately the \| head is made for the HD handle, i.e. the head has the long screw thread attachment. The Long Handle Classic has the short screw thread, so forget trying a swap, unless of course you wish to see if you can rewicker the screw thread.
I'll check this PM to see if they are the same diameter and pitch threads. Perhaps just cutting and throwing $30 worth of parts away is the answer...

This is probably a really stupid question, but seeing as I haven't broken my slant bar in yet I hope you will indulge me. Is it the done thing to shave across the grain, E-W, with the slant, or seeing as it's designed to mimic the shearing action of the diagonal stroke does one just go N-S with it?
Also, is there any special method for doing the jawbone and neck with the slant?
After struggling with the angle on my Futur for a long time, I finally got a good, consistent angle on my cheeks this morning (thanks largely to my new found confidence since I started with the NB shave cream) and I was even able to get a reasonably good angle and close shave going across the jawbone. However, I am still struggling with the transitional area that goes from the jawbone onto my neck. The change in the facial contours means that I am unable to get a decent angle here, even when I actually manage to get the blade in contact with my bristles. I can envision that causing considerable problems when I come to use the slant.
I still don't think I am really ready for the slant yet, but seeing it sitting where it does, all shiny and gold, it's becoming quite hard to resist.
Warm regards,
Alex

Ditto on Scotto & DJ's advice.

Ron,
I don't think what you are suggesting would work. Both the top and bottom pieces of the slant are uniquely different from a standard DE (twisted).

Hmmm. If you use a slantbar with the "chevron" stroke (at a downward angle) does that make it just a regular razor???

Further research (looked in the box) revealed that the bottom of the \| is fixed to the HD handle. Oh well.. No graceful long handle for your slant bar.. Zu schlecht, muß Merkur wirklich diesen Kunde Wunsch überprüfen. (Too bad, Merkur really needs to examine this customer desire..)

What's next? How about an adjustable slant?

I love the feel of their long handle classic, but I was about to give up on it until I took Ron's advice- a feather makes a world of difference in that razor.

Actually a question I have as well (I use the HD with a diagonal stroke, and I'm awfully curious to see if there's more to the slant bar than building in the diagonal stroke).

I'll find out next week, though; decided to give myself a father's day present.

Not at all. Besides addressing your face at an angle, the Slant's head also twists the blade. Once you've held/used one, you will understand the impossibility of the question you've asked.

I have one. I was just being my usual obnoxious, smarmy self. Sorry.

Now on to more important matters- how was that first str8 shave? I see you used a second razor for the S-N pass- I did the same. In retrospect, I think I learned more when I used it alone. Of course, overcoming the desire to obtain the BBS is tough, but it forces you to at least attempt the harder areas. Just take it slow and easy, and what seems impossible today will become second nature in no time.

Have fun!

The slant-bar builds in the chevron cut, and to do this it has to twist the blade ever so slightly, the cap & bar guard are shaped such that this small twist has minimal effect.

Slant-bars make shaving easier not harder.

Let's not forget Gentlemen a standard head DE is a more versatile tool and with good technique shaves just as close.

Regards
John
