Skunky AS

I've had a plastic bottle of Clubman sitting on the shelf for a while now. It's in rotation and gets used at least once a week. But recently I've noticed that the scent in the bottle (not on the skin - yet) has begun to turn a bit skunky. I'm thinking it could be a combination of a couple of things and wondered if anyone else has experienced this:

1. The plastic from the bottle is leeching into the scent.

2. Since the AS is alcohol based it might be getting "light struck", similar to the way beer can go skunky if it is over exposed to light.

Could be either. Glass is always best for AS. Find a glass bottle you like, transfer the contents, then transfer the label, if you like.

Definitely best to keep AS out of the light, sunlight at least. Many old AS bottles came in brown glass which helped preserve the contents longer.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think this bottle of Clubman is done for, but I'm buying another, so into a nice blue glass container it goes.

Heat is probably even worse for it. Kept in a warm environment, I would think, would do faster damage than just being exposed to light. If it is just in your home, you can keep it out on the counter or on a shelf. I just wouldn't keep it next to a window or anything. If you buy vintage after shave, stuff that has been sitting around on a shelf in a store for years is usually fine. But I'd be leary of anything form an outside flea market, that might be out in the hot sun day after day.

I've found aftershaves round here that I know I have not seen in decades. No problems with them but they have been in cool dark locations.

Direct sunlight is not good for anything except plants

I've noticed as it starts to get pretty warm around here, Clubman begins to smell skunky after on the skin for a while.

I used to use some skunky aftershave when I was in college.... but since I've grown older and held a job for a number of years I no longer need to resort to such measures. Same with beer.

green bottles + light = bad (skunky) beer. Moosehead & LaBatts ... ugh!

I dumped out a bottle of Old Spice that I had sitting around for years, I wasn't into aftershaves before and probably never used it, so I'm not sure what it was suppose to smell like but it just didn't seem right.
