What's new

sippin' rum

Ok guys, I'm looking for some advice for high end sipping rum. I've got a bottle of Havana Club 7 year but don't know what else is out there.

Show me what you've got!

One caveat; it has to be available here:

www.lcbo.ca

Province run liquor sucks.

Ron Zacapa 23 is my favorite sipper with Zaya Gran Reserva a close second.

Neither appear available at the store you pointed out.

Unfortunately I also have a rum not available through the site you reference, but the 3 Star Ron del Barralito is an amazing rum. The 2 star is also good, but the 3 star is something special. It's from Puerto Rico and has no sweetness or spice to speak of really. It's almost more like a whiskey. Amazing on ice or neat.

My recs from the list:
Appleton Extra 12
El Dorado 15
Mount Gay Extra Old

My thoughts exactly. It's hard to go wrong with any of these. The MGXO is the most expensive of the bunch. I believe the other two are fairly close in price.

Matusalem Gran Reserva, Don Pampero Anniversario, and Ron Zacapa 23 Solera make rotating appearances on my bar shelf. There's usually one of them there.

Zaya is wonderful, but a bit too "candy in a glass" for me.

Flor de Cana's rums are well-priced (i.e., dirt cheap) and very good. The 12 year old is pricier than the rest of the line, but wonderful.

thanks guys, I'm gonna have to check a few of these out. I will also keep an eye out for the ones I can't get here next time I am out of province.

Had some of my Havana Club 7 the other night to get reacquainted with rum, and it was tasty, but I'm running low.

As a fellow Torontonian I sympathize with you about our Province controlled supply of booze. :(

I have just discovered the El Dorado 15 year old and it seems to be easily available at the LCBO. It's got a lot more depth of flavour than the Havana Club, and I am a big fan of Havana Club, that 7 year old was the first rum I ever enjoyed without a mix.

The LCBO does seem to be getting a better selection of premium liquors these days. Try the big store at Yonge and Summerhill, it's an old train station they converted. It's a great store, and they even have a tasting bar so you can try some of the really expensive stuff without have to drop a few hundred before knowing whether you are going to like it.

I agree. I'm a whisky man but I'll drink Zacapa anytime. I picked up a bottle of Zacapa XO at the duty free in Dubai a few months ago, now I wish I had bought a lot more. Smoother and a little less sweet than the 23 solara.

Mount Gay XO
Pyrat XO (delicious and citrusy, also cheap in OH)
Appleton 12
Rhum Barbancourt 15 y.o. (really different from anything else I've had)
