Single Edge Razors

What's the lure to them? Do they shave that much better than a double edge?

Better is a very subjective term. They shave well. They're cool looking. And readily available at a decent price. They're also just strange enough to appeal to the more adventurous among us.

some of the smoothest/closest faceshaves I've ever had have been with a Schick I1 injector

I headshave almost exclusively with a gillette g-bar

highly recommended!

it is fun to try the different options.

The blade is stiffer and does not bend like a double edge.
One could say that the feel is mid way between a DE and a straight razor.

Personally, I don't find them to be superior to a double edge, but I do find them to be equivalent. I don't find the shaving experience to be any more or less enjoyable, but it is different. The end result is the same. That's the fun for me. Different car, different road, same destination. And the razors are really cool.

Single edge razors look so vintage cool that people are surprised when you say you still use them. Some of them (like the GEM 1912s) are very LOUD when shaving and I like that too. Also- the stiffer blade tends to not irritate my neck compared to the DE blades.Oh and they are still available for a song.

+1 exactly. My Schick M-2 Adjustable Injector can give me a super smooth irritation free shave with less passes than any of my DE's. I could actually skip shaving this morning because yesterday's shave was that good, nah!!,:001_tongu.

I actually think a 1912 is easier to shave with, and to learn, than almost any DE razor. The angle is natural and the blade has no flex. My shaves seem to last longer as well, unless I have a brand new blade in a DE.

Pretty much Ford vs. Chevy, the exceptions being the early wedge blade/stamped models. The late teens/early 20s were a period of social and industrial renaissance, and there were a ton of different ideas about how to create the "Greatest Shave"! Some ideas were pretty darn aggressive...
