Simpsons - which one?

Hello everyone.

I'd like to get a Simpsons shaving brush. Cost is not an issue. Up to $300 is fine.

Ill use Doc4's excellent proforma to explain myself:

  • Your existing harem of badgery beauties! ... tell us what brushes you already have (if any) and what qualities about each you like or dislike

A free Omega I got off business class on Emirates Airlines.
I don't have experience in which loft type or design (fan, bulb etc etc) to get.

  • Your lathery leanings ... mostly this means do you use soaps or creams? Do you facelather or lather in a bowl? Those answers can often influence the type and size of a brush

I have Truefitt & Hill shaving soap and L'Occitane shaving cream. I use either in a ceramic bowl.
I will be getting others in the future. The Crabtree & Evelyn sandalwood soap smelled great.

  • What you want from your next brush .... now that you've told us which brushes you have (see above), tell us what you want from your new brush ... "firmer than my Vulfix ... smaller than my Polo 8 ... not as prickly as my boar-hair brush ..." You get the idea. Maybe you can't compare this to a brush you already have .... "I want a scrubby facelathering brush for triple-milled soaps" or even "I want my first brush ... a good introductory badger brush."

I want the creamiest lather using a piece of artwork in my hand. Yes the tool, to me, is as important as the end result. So that's why I'm opting for Simpsons. Design and craftsmanship look amazing.

  • Brush aesthetics ... kind of a rough, catch-all phrase meaning "tell us more about what you want in the brush". Maybe you want a long skinny handle? or a handle that's easy to grip when wet and covered in tather? Material and colour? Overall appearance? Do you want "heft"? If you tell us the bruah has to have a black handle, we'll not bother you with white-handled options!

Im not too picky with aesthetics. I do have larger hands though so a little knob style brush may not be optimum.

  • Budget. If SWMBO has given you $80 for the brush, there's not much point in us telling you that a Plisson HMW is exactly what you need.

Open budget

  • Size matters .... if you like small brushes, or large, or medium ... or whatever ... let us know and we can direct you.

Unsure of the implications of size. I'm assuming a larger brush will require a larger bowl to generate lather and smaller brushes are better for the face. You guys tell me.

  • Brushes that have already piqued your interest .... if you are trying to decide between *this* brush and *that* brush .... doubtless you'll tell us and maybe even give links to the brushes. This is good not only so we can tell you in our experiences which of the two brushes best meets your needs, but maybe we know a third, fourth, fifth ... that are even better.

The Simpsons looked nice but I'm not apprehensive about other similar in quality and craftsmanship brush brands.

  • Please don't forget to tell us that this will be your last or only brush, and that "SBAD hasn't really gotten ahold of me." We need a good laugh.

Ill definitely have two brushes.

Thanks everyone.

If you are leaning twoards a bowl lathering brush, the Simpson Polo is a great choice. They come in a variety of sizes and even offer the Simpson "best" grade hair now. If you are looking into a face lathering brush the Chubby series are IMO the best for this. Also offering 3 knot sizes and a varitety of hair grades. For an all around type brush the Duke series is an excellent choice. The loft and density allow for a perfectly balanced performer IMO.

Personaly I cannot answer those questions as I have never owned a Manchurian brush yet. As far as the silvertip lable on the LE brushes I too was a little confused. I always considered them to be on par with the super grade hair, maybe just as a true silver tip. I would recommend sending Simpson themselves an email they have always been very helpful with any questions I have.

Email Mark direct at the Simpsons site and ask for a recommendation. I've done it twice and found Mark's recommendations to be right on. Of course I had other Simpsons at the time as a comparison.

I agree, e-mail Mark at Simpson, tell him your parameters and tastes, let him guide you. He directed me to a model 58 that I couldn't be happier with ('cept I'd 've liked Manchurian. I like a lot of backbone).

I'm also a fan of Tulips and Polos as I have big hands and often bowl lather.

Thanks everyone. I'll contact them regarding the Manchurian question.

Now to tackle the queries in the initial post please.
