Simpsons Duke dimensions?

I'm confused about the dimensions of the Simpsons Duke brush.

http://www.bullgooseshaving.net/ says:
Duke 1:
Knot Diameter: 19mm
Loft: 45mm
Duke 2:
Knot Diameter: 21mm
Loft: 46mm
Duke 3:
Knot Diameter: 23mm
Loft: 46mm

http://www.westcoastshaving.com/ says:
Duke 2:
Knot Dia: 21mm
Bristle Loft: 46mm
Duke 3:
Knot Dia: 23mm
Bristle Loft: 46mm

http://thesuperiorshave.com/Simpsons_Brushes.html says:
Duke D1:
Knot Diameter: 19mm
Loft: 45mm
Duke D2:
Knot Diameter: 22mm
Loft: 49mm
Duke D3:
Knot Diameter: 25mm
Loft: 51mm

The http://www.simpsonshavingbrushes.com/shop/3/index.htm page doesn't seem to have any dimensions.

Bullgoose and WCS agree about the D2 and D3, but neither agrees with TSS. These are handmade products, but is there really this much variation? Are some of these measurements pre-Vulfix? Are some of these measurements just plain wrong?

You hit the nail on the head with the handmade product acknowledgement. Some vendors actually try to measure the brushes they currently have IN STOCK, so that they can give their best information. Yet some use calipers to measure, some use rulers, some rely on their experience and "eyeball" it. Others use measurements they may have found on the internet.

I have researched (and bought) several brushes where there were two or sometimes three different sets of specs. I have read on more than one occasion where you can phone the vendor and they will try and pick the particular specs you may want in a certain model. Actually measure them while you're on the phone.

Yes, DO phone to ask the dimensions on the brush you are considering. Better, tell the vendor the dimensions you want. There is variation because each brush is hand made, and enough variation that it can make a real difference in the appearance and performance.

Would you choose different dimensions for a soap brush vs. cream ? ( for face lathering )

Interesting thread. My Duke 3 measures, by eyeball, 24mm diameter and 50mm loft. I suspect the folks at Superior Shave are actually measuring their brushes.

Simpsons QC are pretty terrible

Their products WILL vary

are you saying simpsons are a bad choice for brushes or simply their quality control? I'm new to de shaving but wanted to buy my brother one as a b-day gift. upgrade from the simple kit his wife got him. people rave about them. just curious for your two cents and personal experience. thanks

Many people here are Simspon fans, some feel that they make the best brushes out there, and the Duke 2 you asked about is a popular brush. I own a Colonel which I've been very happy with. Since they are essentially handmade, there is some variation in size between examples of the same model. I don't know if it's fair to call it a QC "problem" because I suspect its typical of most brush makers to have slight variation. Personally I think a Simpson shaving brush would be a darn nice gift.

Let me start by saying Simpsons are fantastic brushes. I have owned 4 of them (Duke 2, Duke 3, Commodore x2, Wee)

Now lets talk QC...

I can buy the fact that they are hand made and that carries with it some slight degree of variation; however, they take it to the extreme. Stickers off center and overlapping the brush name, lofts varying 5mm, knots varying widths 2mm, etc are all unacceptable in my eye, and it is why I have switched to German brushes. Zee Germans are the best at giving you the quality you expect...or at least in my experience they have.

If you want a Simpson, and you are picky about the specifics, the I suggest looking at The Superior Shave to pick out the exact one you like.
