Simpson Duke 2 a shedder?

Hey all,

I just got my simpson duke 2 and was doing a test lather to get some of the residual badger funk out when I noticed several hairs on my hand and in my soap bowl! It was probably 6-10 hairs. This seemed a bit excessive considering that my AoS travel brush only shed about 3 hairs and Simpson has such a reputation. Is it just because Simpson packs so much hair into their knots or is it just another case of the newb jitters?

Thanks,

My Duke 2 and 3 both lost hairs in the initial break in (first day)

I think it is due to the knot being VERY dense

Since then I havent lost a single hair

What I've been doing with new brushes that shed any hairs on the first lather is to collect and save the hairs just in case I need to present my case for an exchange. I haven't had to do it yet but I'd rather play it safe.

I lost two single hairs on my first two attempts since than not a single hair, I would also like to add that all my Simpson stuff has the same hair retaining quality two them.

Lost two more little hairs today but I have still only used it about 5 times. Its still super dense but all the reading about HOT water loosening the epoxy in the knot has me scared!!! Tell me I'm just being a scaredy newb!

Don't use hot water, rather warm. I'm not sure at what temperature the epoxy will start to loosen up, but I'd rather be on the safe side. If my hand can take the heat then my brush can, that's how I reason.

Standard. Only if it continues past the first couple of weeks do you need to worry.

That's what I am doing now but am I too late?!?!? I really doubt that there is an issue but I received this brush as a gift and it is more expensive/nicer than anything I would have ever bought myself so I am a little paranoid!

Thanks all! I did not know that the ADs came with extreme psychological side effects! The horror, the horror!

I've always used the hottest water the tap provides. I've Never had a problem or concern about the effect on ANY knot. I can say without hesitation, that you cannot possibly get hot enough water from your tap to soften epoxy.

Lost three more hairs today. I am beginning to doubt that this is normal break in as its been almost a month now. I will keep posting as time goes on if necessary. I really hope its not!

Lost three more hairs this week! I am saving them now and posting here to keep a timeline.

I agree with MaxP above. I submerge my Simpson's Duke in water that is as hot as the tap provides (almost too hot to put your hand in) and have had no problem. When I first bought my Best Duke 3 it lost three or four hairs a day for a week, and then stopped, but even if it hadn't you must remember there are in the region of 15,000 hairs in this brush. Just enjoy the brush; life is too short to start collecting shed hairs.
