simpson brush advice

Feel the need to get another brush and have decided on the polo. I mostly use creams and on the very odd occasion soap. Here's the thing do i go with a best or a super and what are the differences. If someone with experience of simpson brushes could put me right thanks.

Welcome!

polo is great choice for bowl lather
Best = not so soft, a bit prickly
Super = soft
Super 2 band = soft + lots of backbone

Polo is a very dense knot brush with a large handle (think a big handled Chubby and you will get the idea).

I can say nothing bad about the Polo line and have personally owned an 8 in super badger and a 12 in best badger.

The immense density of the knot makes the difference between best and super very subtle.

Have a Colonel in Best....excellent with both creams and soaps. My Emperor 2 in 2-Band was alright with creams but worked better with soaps of all types. Truth be told, I believe the Best will serve your needs much better; it's a much more versatile knot.

The Polo is an excellent brush for bowl/scuttle lathering and has a very dense knot. Simpsons Best is a soft and thick grade of hair with a hint of scritch to it. Some batches are softer than others and there can be quite some differences. Simpsons Super 3 band is a luxuriously soft and fine grade of hair with snow white tips. Also, the Super 3 band tends to hold more water and to give a larger post-lather bloom. I honestly love both.

My friend, you love all of them....

Are you a face latherer or bowl latherer? If a face latherer, you'll probably prefer Best. If you use a bowl, Super will likely be your preference.

Enjoy!

I just bought a super 2 band tulip 1 off a me ever here and it is my first brush with a hair grade above best. While Simpsons Best hair is much better than most, I find that the Super 2-band is the perfect mix of soft luxorious tips but with some backbone!

I have five Simpson super two-bands in my collection of thirteen, or as I prefer, my den of twelve with a travel brush in the closet.

I enjoy the others for their qualities, of course, and for the variety; but the super two-bands are just irresistible.

The Super in two-band is the way to go. The Best can be quite prickly. My favorite Simpson brush is the Polo 8 in Super, a great brush.

Mine last and only 2band was prickly (resilient hairs) and was immediately traded, and has been traded again. The new owner was given full disclosure on it, wanted to try and got the same unpleasant results. I guess it wasn't the 2band gel ones that a few members rave about

you take your chances with Simpsons, even Super like mine was. For the $180 price tag, it performed like a $50 brush.

IMO you are much better off and will likely get more value for the $ if you start to look outside the Simpson line, which to me is not the same as the Old Simpson brushes used to be(from what I have heard were amazing), the new ones seem inconsistent and quality fading.

if you have to and want to stick with a Simpson, I'd recommend used as you can find out about knot feel and know exactly what you will get. Others go directly to Simpson and get them hand picked, but they is out of my price range too with MAP and shopping and VAT etc

IF you are concerned about your brush being scritchy, I would tend towards the Super 3-Band. Otherwise, both Best and Super 2-Band are very good options.

+1 This is a perfect description of the differences and what to expect from each hair grade.

I agree with what is stated above. There is definitely variation among Simpson Best brushes. I usually experience more than a hint of scrtich with mine. I have not had Brucered's bad experience of bothersome scritch in my Simpson 2-band Supers. The ones I have are soft (between Best and 3-band) but also nicely scrubby.

i had such high hopes for it too, months of research, going back and forth and when i got it, it was not for me.

i hear the current 2 band brushes are ultra soft and gel like, but i'm not willing to try another one at this point. i am very happy with my rotation brushes and have no issues with any of them.

the bothersome scritch was like no other brush i have tried. it was like i could feel all the individual hairs poking at my face. when i pressed harder, it would splay and be ok. when i painted it was fine. but when i used light pressure to apply the soap to my face in circular motions, it was discomforting, so had to go.

like you, i feel a link between brush and shave. if i do not enjoy the look, feel and performance of my brush, i do not enjoy my shave. it did not chew up my face by any means and my razor sill performed as it should with the lather which was also fine, but using the brush did not make me happy, thus my shaves were not enjoyable like they are when i use an all around great brush.

That's too bad. I think your's was a Tulip 2, right? I have one and it's a favorite. And my face seems to be fairly sensitive to scritch. I think you must have landed an outlier.

My T2 2-band is an incredibly nice soft brush with great flow through and better than average backbone. But I don't find its properties and good qualities very different than my 2-band Thater. Actually, these two brushes are very similar, but the Thater is much cheaper.
