should I make the switch?

I love the de razor, but keep reading the shave is better and less rash comes from a straight....should I make the switch or stay with a DE?

Straights are a heckuva lotta fun.

There is a longer learning curve to getting quality shaves with a straight, at least a couple of months. They require more upkeep, stropping every time you shave and honing or at least touching up once every few months.

All that being said, go for it! The stropping only takes a few minutes once you get the hang of it, and touching up is easy. I really enjoy it, but it's not for everybody.

Watch a couple of videos on youtube and see if it is something you think you would enjoy.

+1

Learning a straight takes a lot of patience, and the willingness to accept subpar shaves for a couple of months. You need to be fairly dedicated to the process, and not willing to give up easily, as there will be days when you have absolutely wretched shaves.

If you are interested in it, by all means, give it a whirl. :tongue_sm

I would also like to learn the art of the straight razor, but for now my Gems and Schick injectors (Single edge) are the next best thing.

I've been straight shaving for 4 months now and while I can get as good of a shave from my straight as I can with my Merkur HD I still tend to get slightly more irritation from the straight. Then again, there is always the occasional nick that takes forever to heal ...

It's a lot of fun to learn though so if you like learning, go ahead :001_smile

A straight razor won't guarrantee an irritation free shave. If you feel that a straight razor would be better for you or think you would enjoy the shaves more with one, try it!

+1 on everything that has been said!

I think it is worth trying just to satisfy your curiosity, just do not expect miracles. If you go at it with an open mind and you are prepared to accept a series of sub-par shaves you have nothing to loose. In the beginning you can always do touch ups with the DE.

After a month of straight shaving, I can honestly say that it is a very rewarding experience and it is very addictive. I still get a lot of razor burn from trying too hard on some places but I can start competing with the DE for face smoothness.
