Short sleeve button down shirts

What are your thoughts on them?

I think they looks silly as a dress shirt (with or without a tie) but as a sport shirt, I think they are fine. I see them more as a convenience, as opposed to a wardrobe staple.

there was a thread on this topic a few months ago ... specifically, wearing a tie with short-sleeve shirts. The general consensus was NO, Don't Do It.

Short sleeve oxford shirts? i don' think so. It just doesn't look right ... like part of it is missing.

I never wear short-sleeve shirts, anytime, anywhere. With or without a tie, I don't care how hot it is, I don't wear short-sleeves, period.

I agree on not wearing short-sleeved shirts formally or with a tie. However, short-sleeved, collared and buttoned shirts are just fine casually. I often wear them with shorts or casual pants. They're slightly dressier than a t-shirt or knit polo. I've bought a few different brands from REI and enjoy a few from Martin+Osa. Maybe tastes are different on the Left Coast, but they're quite nice in warm weather.

I believe they are alright for a "car salesman" like me in the summer time...I usually wear them with khakis or the light weight dress pants (light colors, too). Just a cool casual look. Remember it is hot around here and especailly when I go out on the asphalt, thus the hat comes along, too.

No plaid pants though....

Or do you think I should wear an open collar ?

I NEVER wear one with a tie or in a business environment. Long sleeve only looks right to me. I own one short sleeve dress shirt, light blue...never wear it to work. I have worn it a few times in a more casual environment.

OLD SCHOOL SPEAKING HERE

if it is casual enough for a ss shirt, skip the oxford and go with something fun, like a guayaberra, bahama style print, vented fishing shirt, 1930s vintage knock off, or cuban style

never never tucked in

I chose linen, bamboo viscose, cotton, or cotton/linen

no socks

worn in loafers

short brim hat

thats how we used to do it, and some of us still do,

enjoy and find your style and everyone else can ____________ .

I wear them all the time in the warmer months (which in the Houston area is 8-9 months long). It is entirely too hot to wear long sleeved shirts all of the time in my job (I'm a librarian at a Chiropractic college and I generally work behind the scenes). I have been know to wear short sleeves shirts with a tie when I'm teaching in the summer months. I can't handle the near heat stroke I get walking across campus when it's 95 degrees outside with a heat index of 110 because of the humidity. I also have to wear an undershirt year round because I am one of those poor souls that perspires.

The term “Button Down” most commonly refers to a collar that buttons down on the shirt. This type of collar is fine during the day but considered bad form after dark.

I assume you refer to a button front camp or sport shirt, these are casual wear not dress shirts, wearing one with a tie looks retarded/backwards. My dress cloths are just that, to dress when going out, the staples of my wardrobe are chino’s, jeans, wool trousers and sport shirts.

I think they look like a 1980's snake used car salesman. I have one and have no clue how it got in my closet. They are hidious looking. Wear a golf shirt. With tie, without...makes no difference. Ugly looking.

If you want a buttoned shirt (up or down) to wear casually find a nice bowling shirt or hawaian shirt.

I have several of them - they wear fine with jeans or khakis. Mine are solid or simple prints from Lands End or old Eddie Bauer kind of thing. This shirt is something you never wear with a tie - just casual with casual pants. I can't or won't wear nicer clothes because of my job. It would be nice to say these kind or shirts are an abomination and I won't wear them, but it gets to be in the 90s F here with 100% humidity in the summer (ie now) and I refuse to wear long sleeves in this weather or trash any nicer clothes from chemicals at work.

We don’t get the humidity in Southern Cali4nia, but 80° to 100°F + days are common during the summer months. T-shirts are fine around the house, but I’m not comfortable wearing one out in public.

I've always enjoyed wearing short sleeve button down shirts because they are comfortable, but if it irks certain opinionated people as well - thats a bonus!

It's simply too hot for too much of the year here for me to wear long sleeves. I perspire heavily and long sleeves accelerate that and no deoderant, A/S, or EDT can keep. If it comes down to looking "nerdy" or improper because of short sleeves and occasionally a tie, or smelling bad and being "sweaty" at work, I'll look nerdy and improper any day.

I agree with this statement.

I think this style looks nice - and more importantly, feels nice when it's 100 degrees outside!

Here in hot and humid Florida you will find many executives and professionals who wear ss shirts under a jacket. Back in my professional days this was a "no-no," but my career was in the north east where it rarely reached the heat level as here in Florida.
