Shipping within Canada and to the US

So I just got back from the post office as I was sending a few razors away that i had sold. One was going down to Ohio while two others were staying in Canada and heading to Ontario and Quebec. Not having sent anything like this in the mail before I didn't really know what to expect but having received my share of shaving related packages I had a vague idea.

Anyway, the first one up was the one to Ohio and it cost me a little under $6.50 international air. Sweet I thought because it was around what I was expecting. Having seen this, I thought my next two packages, both staying here in Canada couldn't be any more then that. Boy was I wrong. The one to Ontario cost just about $12 and the one to Quebec was over $13. ***

Now I can understand if they were all different sizes or weight but all three were shipped in the Canada post bubble envelopes. The one going to Ohio was a Gillette Lady Blue Star c/w case and the other two each contained only one straight razor each. And the Canadian one's were just normal postage. Nothing fancy. I don't know how the hell it's more to ship within Canada then outside but I'll take it as a lesson learned and make sure to account for that next time I have to sell anything.

It costs me double the price to ship to BC than California, figure that out!:001_smile You should see how much it angers you when you run a small business where you ship numerous packages a day.

BTW... It would cost me more to ship to my neighbor than to California as well.

It makes absolutely no sense. I was completely shocked and caught off guard. In that one instant, where shipping charges for things I bought seemed absurd, it all made sense.

On a side note, I bought 2 Razorock from your site recently because it was cheaper going through you then Fendrihan. I thought your rates were pretty reasonable.

Welcome to the wonderful, twisted logic of national post services!

Here in the UK, above a certain weight (can't remember what it is at the mo), it's cheaper to send stuff by Royal Mail's "airmail small packets" to Europe than it is to anywhere in the UK. "Rest of the World" is a bit dearer (which makes sense as it's going further). However, I've sent stuff to Canada that arrived quicker than the same package sent to London

Canada Post was incorporated as a crown corporation in 1981. It was mandated to become self-sufficient after many years of financial losses. Towards this end they were free to charge whatever they wanted except for lettermail which was capped and guaranteed to every Canadian so as to not p*** off the voters.

Canada Post has been profitable since 1985. They have very little competition due to the vast size of the country and relative sparseness of population. They've even bought out some competitors to help keep prices up. The government is very lenient with them regarding competition laws since it's a huge revenue generator. The reason it's cheaper to ship to the US is that Canada Post ships to the closest border point and then USPS takes over in a much larger and more competitive market.

The occasional delay due to unforseen circumstances is just something we have to live with.

Canada post is a pile of rancid garbage. Sad but true.

In the past year they've lost 3 of my packages and I only got my insurance claim back on one of them.

I never ship via Canada Post. The extra few dollars is totally worth it to use UPS or Purolator.

It's really just amazing, no matter what, if a company is owned by the government the service will be absolutely horrendous.

Canada Post employees make obscenely high salaries for the position - the average letter carrier earns something like close to $30/hour, and like all government companies, getting fired is next to impossible for anything short of massive acts of misconduct.

They keep raising the price of postage by 1 cent so that all the stamps you've bought can't be used on their own and then you have to buy 1 cent stamps that probably cost more than that to produce, like pennies.

They think of themselves like all crown corporations of guardians of Canadian culture so they constantly contract every artist they can find to design special stamps and so forth - just like the mint, you're hard pressed to find a quarter these days that just has the old caribou on it lol.

Makes me mad.

That's Canada post. I never understood how it works. If you ship something in a province next to you, it's not so bad. 2 povinces, still ok, 3 and more, nah, it's a fortune.

The cost is calculated using the size, weight and distance. They have some magical formula to make sure that everyone pays the most!

I try to avoid them but they can't be avoided much...

That's why I'm in Australia now... Shipping is much better
