Shedding issue

Hello all,

I had purchased a Simpson Chubby 2 in best from a member on this board. Since owning it, it has shed at least 2 hairs each time I use it. I have taken good care of it: lightly shaking it after each use and gently dabbing it on a towel. At this point I have taken it out of my rotation for fear of rendering it useless because of the shedding problem. Can anyone recommend a way to stop the shedding or at least slow it down? I know, it sounds silly, but I really like this brush and would like to keep it in good working order. Thank you in advance.

Do you know how old the brush is? I would not worry if it is quite new. Some brushes can take a while to settle. However if it is older I would fear the knot is damaged/weakened or the hairs have become brittle and prone to breaking. Soaps and creams contain acids that can damage hairs on a brush over an extended period of time if the brush is not well rinsed after each use. If that is the case im afraid there is not much that can be done.

Unfortunately I don't know how old the brush is :(.

It looks to be in fairly new condition. The handle has no signs of aging or discoloration, but the lettering has been rubbed off in a few spots. If it is indeed beyond the point of no return, can anyone recommend a reputable shop where I can have the knot replaced? I'm hoping that it's just settling in.....

The seller should be able to tell you how old it is. If the knot is less than a month or so old, I wouldn't worry - remember, these are crafted by hand, and it's likely that some loose hairs are present that didn't get completely tied up. They'll fall out a couple at a time for a while, but they weren't attached to begin with and nothing you did made them fall.

Well, he only shaved with it 5 or 6 times. I purchased it in June, so I'm guessing it's at least 2 months old. I used it after making this thread and it shed 6 hairs :scared: How long do you think it would take for it to stop shedding? A ball park estimate is all I'm asking for - this way I know if it's still breaking in or if it needs to be replaced.

Thank You.

Several vendors recommend shampooing a brush vigorously, letting it fully dry overnight and then combing through it the next day with a wide tooth comb to get the straggler loose ones that may not have gotten glued into the knot out, if that brings out a huge amount of hair or if it continues dramatically like more than 1 or 2 for more than a few uses after, probably not a good sign. I did this myself on a simpsons emperor 2 with great results.

Sorry, to clarify, the question isn't how 'calendar' old the brush is, but how often it's been used. 5-6 shaves is basically cherry, we're talking a month of daily use.

Anyways, if it ends up being a shedder, what will you do? It's too late to return it for a refund, so you might as well use it. At 2-3 hairs lost per shave, it'll take at least couple years for you to even notice a difference. If and when it gets too thin for use, replacing a knot is a relatively easy craft project if you have a few basic tools.

Your shedding rate isn't out of line for a new brush. Give it a while (say a month) and if it continues to shed, then you should be a little more concerned. Shedding is inevitable but shouldn't be ongoing at the rate you are specifying. As to what you can do to reduce the shedding rate, unless you want to stop using the brush or baby so much that it's an inconvenience, I would continue to use and have the knot replaced when it becomes too thin.

I suggest you read this post on shedding.. Far too many gents are afraid to take a firm hand to their brushes to make up for limited dressing..

If the shedding doesn't stop after several months and the brush is a Simfix, you can contact Brett over at Progress Vulfix by email. He is very receptive and will offer to inspect the brush and replace it if it is defective. At least he did with my Vulfix brush. Check out the Vulfix website.
