Shaving with Grandpa's Fatboy

Last month I came across a box of old razors in the basement and posted a photo of the stash. Most were my Dad's but I recognized one as the one HIS father always had on the shelf in his bathroom - a '59 Fatboy that I'm pretty sure was the one razor he used for the rest of his life (he died in '74). It took a lot of cleaning and polishing to get the razor and case looking good. I have been shaving with it for the last week and am very impressed; using "no pressure" is very easy because of the heft of this razor. I do the holding, it does the shaving! Not even one nick yet. A fine razor - makes me wonder why Gillette only made these for four years. Here's a pic of the razor along with a shot of my Grandpa (also from 1959 coincidentally). I'm happy that I get to carry on his memory and tradition when I lather up each morning.

Very nice post. I miss both of my grandfathers and always remember how smooth their faces were when I kissed them. They were both simple, "manly" men, but very affectionate. Great men who knew how to shave. Thanks for sharing and cheers to you and "grandpa's razor". I know you'll think fondly of him as you use it.

Great post....always wonderful to have a tangible connection with your past.

Hope you enjoy it for many years to come!!

Wow -- he really knew how to use that razor -- even with out the help of a B&B back in the 50s. Wonder what he used before that razor came to market.

My father would never use anything but electric razors -- something about being hit by his father with the strop! And although he was happy with his "high tech" shaves, none of the electrics he used ever lasted longer than 2 or 3 years.

His father used straights, but no one saved them since he was so abusive with them.

Congratulations to you for finding such a great heirloom. And thanks for sharing your story.
