Shaving on vacation

Last Saturday I started a week's vacation. When I arrived at the hotel I realized that I grabbed the wrong travel kit - the one without a DE razor. So I used my old Fusion razor and canned goo. I did get a decent shave - but it took 6 passes instead of my usual four and I could not get a BBS shave by my mustache area and part of my neck. Plus, the Fusion blade only lasted three days.

After three days I found that I had a shaving stick and T&H travel brush buried in the travel bag. I lathered up and put in a new blade. Much to my surprise I got a BBS shave in four passes. The only difference was that I used my Speick Shave Stick, instead of the canned shaving cream.

Wow! That's quite a difference between the two "lubricators"! The only canned goo I use nowadays is the Canned Proraso. Not bad.

I have been playing around with straight razors, but always end up finishing with my fusion. The fusion works much better with real lather over the canned goo for me.

This was my last day on vacation and I went back to the canned shaving cream. It is definitely making a difference: the shaving stick provided for a much closer and more comfortable shave.

One thing that really surprised me is that with a four pass shave, I can only use the cart for at most three days. After that irritation sets in since the blades seem to lose their sharpness.

Tomorrow it's back to the DE shaving! :001_smile

My main complaint with the cartridges is the lack of longevity. Three shaves max for me, too. I took my Atra Plus carts with me on a cruise earlier this year and I found I got three really good shaves with the carts and some Edge gel. I mean, I was questioning why I started the whole DE thing. Then I cut myself on the fourth shave when the cart stopped moving through the whiskers. I remembered why then...

I'm sure the cartridges must work well for men who have light beards. Mine is dark and heavy so if I miss a day it's very noticeable. I found borderline acceptable shaves with the Mach3 power as much as I hated shelling out for the cartridges. I used to toss them every week, then decided to make them last 2 weeks and oddly it didn't seem to make any difference to the quality of the shave (still mediocre with the need for countless passes). I also found that gel was far more lubricating than foam.

If I was ever in a position where I didn't have a DE to hand, I'd use a single blade Bic Sensitive. I have used them with soap and cream and got as good a result as with my usual Tech plus Feather combination but I doubt I'd get more than one shave from each Bic. I'd suggest that one of the things you learn from this forum is not just what your best shaving set-up is, but also how to get the best out of whatever you can get hold of if you don't have your own shaving kit with you.

When I'm on vacation I grow a beard. After 16 years of being forced to shave every day any chance I have to rebel a little, I go for it!

A shave stick with a cheap synthetic brush works wonders for me on vacation. I pack a Sensor or Mach3 and get a fine shave with them. For me, the prep makes all the difference.

I have always maintained that prep and proper lather are much more important for a successful shave than the razor.

A quality soap leathered up with a good brush surely prepares your face for a great shave. And a cartridge razor can do a nice job, too.
