A few months ago I decided to start with wet shaving when I bought my EJ DE89.
I started out with testing all sorts of stuff. Blades, creams, soaps, brushes, witch hazel, pre-shaves, after-shaves, etc. It was going well but eventually I started cutting things out and now I'm back to shaving in the shower without a mirror, without any cream or lubrication, and without using any sort of post shave treatments. I'm also very happy with my cheap Astra blades.
I don't have particularly tough skin, in fact I'd say I have pretty sensitive skin, but I've been able to get close shaves quickly without nicks or irritation by using the water as lubrication and using my left hand to guide my right hand with the razor. It probably doesn't hurt that the DE89 isn't very aggressive. The first shave with a new blade is always the worst and then I can usually go 4-5 comfortably until it's time to change.
This isn't a story about why people should try this method, it's simply another example of why YMMV is at the end of many posts. Trying everything is the fun part but eventually you figure out what works for you. Since we just had a baby, time is short so this has been a welcome discovery.
Thanks for letting me share.
