What's new

Shaving horror!

Just the other day I was driving and noticed a new hair salon that opended up. what caught my attention was a giant barber shop pole and a huge sign that wrote "now providing hot towel shaves" Since I am a big fan of old school shaving I decided to drop in for a quick look. The place is called "game day". Inside looked real modern and nice. So I go to front counter and asked the petite blonde what sort of hot towel shaves they provide, specifically, the type of blade used to get the job done. A straight razor? A shavette? a feather disposable straight perhaps? NOPE! Not even close! The girl looked confused. She said that they used mach III. I thought I was gonna keel over! A stinkin' mach III cartridge razor that one buys at shoppers! Are u kiddin' me! Is that what people these days think a hot towel shave is! So of course I said thank you and left. I didnt even bother to ask the price. I could not pay for a cartridge shave that a buddy could do for free.

I had a good laugh in the car on the ride home! If only stylists were edumacated these days, huh!!

Thats my story, cheers!

Most people go for barber/salon shaves to enjoy the experience of getting pampered and taken care of - the hot towels, the facial massage, the nice smelling creams and lotions, relaxing in the chair, all that. We are the exception for fetishizing the shave process to the degree we do!

Yes, we certainly are an exceptional bunch. Most people cannot understand nor do they have the patience to learn. I am always pleased to see so many new members here...just hold onto your wallets, guys!

But it's a barbershop lol I know what you mean about enjoying the pampering but a Mach 3 is quite funny.
When I picture barbers I picture classic straight razors and a pro doing it properly.

I think health codes also play a part of this. Much easier just to change a blade then having to sterilize it.

Does anyone want to bet they pull out a can of goo for the shave too? Nothing fancy or gourmet just a generic foam.

I guess I'm lucky my barber does all of his trim work with a straight, and a nice vintage looking hot lather maker. There is something to be said for old military barbers. He even breaks the straight out for my sideburns and the back of my neck, its a nice touch.

I guess that's the way it goes with these new "trendy" barbershops. But really, a Mach III? That to me would not be a barbershop shave. I understand the health reasons for the shavette, but at a barbershop I'd at least expect an open blade razor. :thumbdown

I guess you hadn't seen this video

Interesting video. Seems like there is so much conflicting information on youtube by people who seem to be 'experts.' The person shaving in that video looks like they're putting a LOT of pressure down on the razor. Even when I did shave with a cart, it didn't look anything like that. The other thing I thought off about the video is they used a kid who looked about 16, and he's blonde to boot. There was really no way to tell if he's cutting anything at all.

You should've heard what the "free shave" I would be getting at the AoS store with the purchase of their fusion starter kit. They would open my kit, use my products, and even shave me with one of the carts!

There's so much UNGGHHHHHHHHH inside of me just thinking about it. I'm going to stop here before my head explodes.

And I just saw that video. I'm going to go take a nap with one of my razors and dream of a world where carts don't even exist and our walmart shelves are filled with the 3t's, AoS, proraso, and MWF.
