? shaving for interview

I think I know the answer to my own question, or at least the advice I will take, but for sake of conversation I'll throw it out there.

I had a goatee. Everyone enjoyed it. I had an interview and shaved it. I've began growing it back but have a second interview on Tuesday.

Keep it clean shaven, right? That's what I thought too, thanks. The employer remembers me a certain way, this is a professional suit and tie atmosphere...

Thanks everyone for your help!

I don't think it would swing the interview in either direction, but might as well keep clean shaven. If you have had enough time to sprout a presentable goatee in the meantime, it's certainly an option to keep it! I think goatees are pretty ingrained in society, for better or worse!

My opinion, since you asked, clean shaven wins by a whisker!

I know this might sound silly but it you were clean shaven for the first interview then you should probably stay clean shaven for the second one. I know it's completely irrelevant but just the same . . .

Wear a different shirt too! :)

Then when you get the job, grow a wild, crazy, zany goatee.

Stay clean-shaven. You can always grow the goatee back after you (hopefully) get hired. Best of luck with the interview!

Agree, shave it off for the 2nd interview.

Don't come out and ask your interviewer about grooming standards. Keep on topic and focus on what you have to offer for this position.

While you're there, look around the office and see if any current employees are sporting facial hair. That will let you know if its safe to grow it back.

Even if your observations tell you that its safe to grow a goatee, don't do so right away. Wait about a month or so until you're broken in and feeling more on solid ground. If you can wait that long, hold off until you take your first vacation.

Good Luck!

Before I hired on for my current position, I lurked in the parking lot at quitting time and watched the folks coming out.

I watched how they dressed and whether they had beards or mustaches because I was contemplating growing one.

No one coming out the door had any facial hair, so I shaved clean for the interview.

If the place you are interviewing for permitted facial hair, I don't think I would have shaved for the first interview, but since you did, I would certainly shave for the second one.

Later, if face growth seems to be ok, you can always grow it back.

I recall too in the first interview her asking if I had any visible tattoos. It seems as though they're a big stickler on personal appearance therefore clean shaven I'll likely remain. Not a big deal, I have most most my life anyway. For the first 17 years, at least, I was always clean shaven.

You are going back for a second interview, so you obviously created a good impression. Why risk that?
Plenty of time left to grow a goatee at a later date.

man, I feel your pain. I normally have long hair--about chin length, presentable stylish--but I recently scored a job at a law firm so I had to cut it. I just couldn't risk it. but now that I've been there over a month I think it would be ok if I have long hair as long as I keep it nice.

What really kills me is when I got my hair cut the girl cutting it flat out said, "No, I won't cut your hair." I told her it was for a job interview. she wouldn't cut it too short either and while she was cutting it she made it a point to tell me twice that she broke up with her boyfriend and asked if I was seeing anyone. haha

now that I'm single and employed I have to go back to get a trim.:D

I say shave it and grow it back when they give you too many responsibilities to fire you for something so trivial.

A clean shave is important for an interview. Also...NO COLOGNE OR AFTERSHAVE at an interview. No matter how good you think you might smell, your interviewers are likely to have a different opinion.
