Shaving Cream Question

Good morning All! I have a quick question for the group. I have a nice TOBS Sandalwood shave cream in the tub. I normally take a little and massage it into a wet face and then take my brush to build a lather. That being said, it doesnt lather all that well. I tried building a lather in my cupped hand and it did mucch better. Is there a better way? Could I put a little dash of the cream into a bowl or something and work it from there? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you everyone.
Steve

Check out the tutorials in the 'shaving cream' forum. There's a step by step guide on how to face lather, and another guide on how to lather shaving cream in a bowl.

A bowl or mug comes in very handy for this. I like one with a handle like a coffee cup so I can stick my thumb through it and not rely on cupping it in my hand. Many of these work nicely. http://www.emsplace.com/shaving/soap_mugs_bowls.aspxhttp://www.classicshaving.com/Shave_Mugs_and_Bowls.html Or http://www.straightrazordesigns.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=19

Lately I've been using a empty Trumper shave soap bowl. The wood won't break if I drop it and it is a great size for working up tricky creams. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Geo-F-Trumper-Violet-Shaving/dp/B000C0PAMQ

A few tips:

Soak the brush for a couple of minutes, then shake it a few times. Put a penny size dollop of cream in the middle of the brush and work up in bowl or hand. Add a few drops of hot water at a time if you need a wetter mix.

Sounds like you may be using not enough cream, or too wet a mix.

There is nothing at all wrong with lathering on your hand. Thats my method of choice with creams in a tube. I just put a blob in the palm of my hand and go to town. If it works for you, go with it.

As a plus, palm lathering Speick really helps my skin over the winter. I noticed that by accident. The skin of my left hand, where I put the cream, is much less dry when I'm using Speick cream over the winter.

I bowl lather with TOBS Mr Taylor and Lavender creams. Once I started using more water I started getting better results.

+1 on this video..the bowl is the best way for me:thumbup1:

At first I just wasn't using enough water. Once I got the water right it was a piece of cake....cake frosting that is.

I only bowl lather my TOBS creams... The rest of my creams work well when I apply them directly on my face...

Face lathering creams (TOBS or any other kind) should work just as well as lathering them in a bowl or in your hand. I face lather pretty much everything and get a fine lather. It's just a matter of:

1) using enough product
2) having correct water to cream ratio
3) mixing the lather for a sufficient amount of time

(though, if your water is extra hard, you might have some trouble ... but then you'd have the exact same trouble when bowl lathering / palm lathering)

I Face lather with soaps, but always break out the bowl on creams. I was skeptical, but the right tool for the job really makes the difference.
