Shaving Bowls

I recently purchased a hand thrown shaving bowl from West Coast Shaving. I travel a lot and working up a good lather is not always easy on the road. So I bought a shaving bowl from WCS. The bowl is very nice. It has a nice weight to it, and an unfinished bottom in a non-skid kind of way. The bowl fits nicely in my hand and is the right size for creating a lather with my B&B boar brush. I like the fact that it is a WCS product as they are so supportive of us wet shavers at B&B. So, has anyone else had a good experience with this bowl? What other bowls have worked for you...especially bowls that can easily be taken on the road?

Ideally a shaving soap bowl that primarily is for traveling should have these features:

Not be larger than necessary. Not be heavy. Not be easily broken. And not be a great loss if broken or stolen.

salvation army and/or any second hand stores should be checked. things like this are a dime a dozen there.

I use a small bamboo bowl that I purchased from Ikea, it's really lightweight, unlikely to break and non porous. It is a little on the smaller size, but big enough to mix lather in and under $8

I just got this bowl in green from WCS last week. It was my shave bowl all this week while I was on vacation in San Diego. I think it's a keeper. I agree 100% with your assessment of weight, aesthetics, and performance. I used various creams from a T&H sampler (trafalgar, 1805, rose) and got great lather every day.

That is the color I have. I really like it. Next trip I'm going to try out some MWF.

I've gone through a few bowls and each was good imo. However, on a recent trip with the wife to Bed, Bath and Beyond I came across a VDH soap and bowl combo for $6. The bowl is small and sits right in my hand and personally I think it works great. Well, I guess that's what it was made for! I load off the puck in its original plastic container and then lather in the bowl. If I were to want to travel with it I guess it's small enough to pack and not too fragile. It takes a lot less room than my other larger bowls, in my shaving drawer at home also

When traveling I take shave sticks and face lather.....

At home I use two old stainless steel Danish gravy servers that came out of the back of my kitchen cabinet to make lather in. After trying lots of other bowls/mugs these seem to be the best that I have found. They are both marked Leonard Denmark 18/8 (stainless)

The large one is 5 3/4" across by 2 3/4" deep and perfect for my larger brushes like the Polo 12 and Rooney 3xl

The smaller one is 5 1/4" across by 2 1/2" deep and perfect for my smaller brushes like the Kent BK8

I've had these two bowls for 20 years or so. Never realized how useful they were until I joined B&B and started looking for more things to make lather in Before joining B&B I had always face lathered (always as in for the past 45 years)

If these look interesting you can go to the gravy boat section of eBay and type in either Denmark or Danish (or stainless if you want to wade through a whole pile of them) you will come up with a lot of them. The rim on the bottom makes it easy to hold and it catches any lather that over flows the bowl which helps keep things a little less messy in the shave den.

I thought about ordering the WCS bowl, then found some $1 stoneware bowls at Walmart that work just fine for loading soap. For travel I take a puck of Ogallala in an Ogallala metal mug and my Duke 1. I can soak the brush and soap in the same mug.

I have the same bowl and its the only bowl that I've used since starting wet shaving. In my limited opinion it's a great bowl. I was able to get the tan colored one which matches the bathroom decor so it worked out well. I think for the price, it's a nice simple shave bowl.

@Turtle

I can't find that tube of Kiss My Face anywhere, where did you get it? All I can find in any store that carries KMF is the pump bottle. I like the smaller size and convenience of the tube. I've looked everywhere...no tubes only bottles.

Turtle, I use the same style stainless steel gravy bowl. My mother in law gave my wife and I some old kitchen supplies when we moved into our first apartment 15 years ago. I recently started using the gravy bowl as my lather bowl. I thought I was the only one, lol.
