Shaving bowl dimensions?

Ok everyone, I have a local pottery place that will do custom work, I have talked with them before about a shaving bowl, and they were 100% open to any ideas, they would make me what I like (custom order). I have been to their place, and like their work. Local family been around as long as I can remember (I'm 31, I can remember back to a young kid, they were there).

My question is: what dimensions work best for everyone? I just have a VDH blue/green bowl from their kit, and honestly it could be wider. I was thinking maybe 4 1/2" diameter, 2-2 1/2" deep, with a small lather catching lip, and a subdued spiral pattern in the bottom for lather building.

I like my VDH bowl, but its definitely lacking. Too small. And, this way I can support some real nice people. Prices really are not bad considering hand made and small shop!

Any input would be great. This is really just a lather bowl!

I prefer a slightly smaller bowl that I can grasp in my left hand. Around 4.25" or around 11cm

Your dimensions sound perfect for me - but you can find out without too much trouble. Go to the kitchen and grab a handful of different sized bowls and go to town.

Personally, I hate to clang the brush handle on the side of the bowl. You will find out almost immediately what you like.

Sounds like a great design. I would change the subdued spiral to a pronounced, aggressive grid. That's what my Dirty Bird has and it lathers in mere seconds. Good Luck.

5" and 4 1/2". Two of my very favorites. When you have it made, post a picture.
