Shaver-Grade Gillette NEW prices?

I have been interested in trying a good open comb razor lately, and it appears that the Gillette NEW is frequently recommended. Thus, I was wondering what price range I could expect to acquire a shaver-grade NEW? Also, where would I acquire one - I have not seen shaver-grade versions of NEWs on the BST lately.

Or, what other open combs would you recommend (that are cheap)?

Thank you,
Chase

Well, get a cooncat bob razor...he turns some lovely handles for the long comb gillette open-comb NEW heads that he re-plates...absolutely lovely razors...

Thanks, but I was looking for something more affordable for the time being. As an aside, his razors do look amazing... someday.

Either BST or eBay should get you a shaver grade New for around $10. I picked up one recently in a batch of razors I bought. It had quite alot of plate loss so I hit it with the Dremel with a wire wheel and took it back to it's bare metal of copper and brass. I reckon it looks better than when it was gold plated.

On ebay you could get a neglected Gillette New Open Comb for about $ 10-15. Give them a quick brush up & here you are - shave ready razor for cheap. BTW, they are great shavers.
Just my $0.02.
Cheers.

Chase, here's a Red & Black set at a very good price:

Thank you for the link, it is a great looking razor. For the time being, I will keep an eye out for the $10-15 bare minimum NEWs as they are more in the range that I currently have set aside for such.

Thank you to everyone for the responses! I am glad to hear that it is possible to get one in my price range if I keep an eye out for them.

Chase

In the $10-$20 price range you need to look carefully at the pictures.
The soft copper caps of many vintage NEW can and do have dings in the edges where they hold the blade.
I've had to develop a refurbishing procedure to restore these to a condition worthy of shaving and being replated.

I think my usta-be-gold bar handle was twelve bucks shipped a few months back. It's ugly. Real ugly. Probably four different shades of ugly with a slight dusting of scary.

It's one of my best shaving razors.

Just be patient and keep an eye peeled, you'll find one lickety split.

Thanks for the advice! I look forward to picking up one of your bull mastiff NEWs sometime after I pass the Bar Exam and land a job!

Nevermind, it became a bit pricey, but I wanted it :).

NEW 'made in Canada' with an uncommon case (all of the other NEW cases I seen, the handle lies in front).

dchasef, the 11C is another great open comb, keep an eye out for one as well.

I agree with the others, you should be able to find a NEW in decent shape between $10 - $18.

Should be able to get one for under $10 shipped, if you look around a bit. My roughest one had most of the finish gone, as johnmrson mentioned, I removed the rest with a dremel and scotchbrite, the copper over brass looks good. For $15 you should be able to find one with the finish intact, and only small cracks in the handle.

Thanks to everyone for all of the replies. I have actually been using a NEW for the past week or so now thanks to the generosity of johnmrson!! It has been an amazing razor, and, as I told him, I have been getting better shaves with it more frequently than with either my slant or fatboy. I wish that I knew about it earlier in my wetshaving career.

Thanks again for all of the help. I look forward to saving up for one of the customized NEWs in the future!

Chase

So far the New has been the single biggest disappointment in DE shaving for me. I got a 3 piece long comb New type with good teeth and everything. The plating was also in decent shape, though nothing great.

I've shaved with it maybe 3 times, and every time it was harsh, pulling and resulted in razor burn. I did a bit better with the Old type. The simple early Tech (30s with triangular holes in guard) has so far been head and shoulders above anything else I have tried (including Merkur Progress and 33c razors).

That said, I really would like to make peace with the New and get the great results I'm always hearing about. Perhaps it deserves a re-visit.

The NEW is a rather blade sensitive razor in my opinion and also a razor for the experienced DE user.
When I first returned to the DE razors I got a NEW in a lot of razors I won on e-bay, it was my 1st try with a opened comb and I found it very harsh.
I put it on the shelf and didn't pick it up again for over a year when I discovered a lot of razor I didn't like the 1st time around now gave me great comfortable shaves.

Agree. I've used normal and long tooth NEW's and an 11C and except for the 11C (which I consider a mild razor) have gotten great shaves that equal my 34C. I can, for the first time for me, easily tell a difference between blade brands.

Then, last week, I tried my first OLD type. Oh boy is it aggressive! It does some of the things mentioned already, like pulling, but it does something else, too. It by far gives me my closest shaves I've experienced! My upper lip feels as close shaven as my cheeks have felt in the past and my normal 6-7 hour BBS shave is now 7-8 hours. I've already learned some reduction angles and the pulling is less and less with each shave. It may become my go-to razor.
