Shavemac D01 3band advice please

Hello all! I'm putting together the specs on my next brush and was hoping to get some opinions please. I currently have a Shavemac #25 from WCS in 21mm knot and it has a loft of 50mm. It is the silver tip version. I love the brush but wish for a reduced loft and a bit more backbone so I am putting together a new brush. I face lather only and use mostly soap at this point. I have decided that I want a D01 3 band with a 22mm knot but am unsure what the best loft would be for that knot size and to maximize the benefits of the D01 hair...i think i want to go a little shorter on the loft but dont understand the technicalities of brush buliding as mush as most of you gents here . I am considering a fan shape as well to get the feel of more of the brush on my face as i lather. Any opinions? Best regards! Marc

For this particular size knot I say go with a loft of 47-48. I have a D01 3-band fan in 22/47 and I think it's got the perfect amount of backbone but maximizes on shavemac's great lather release and performance. The 3-band is a great balance of soft and backbone. At the max, I would go 48, especially with a fan (definitely no more than that). Here it is in a vintage Plisson handle.

Yes it is! Why fan shape? Do you feel it lathers better than the bulb shape? Does it have enough backbone that you are lathering with the tips or does it fan outwards some?

Thanks for the compliments gents. It's number 3 on my top brush list (sometimes it's 4). I enjoy fans for one reason really: my experience with bulbs is that some with more backbone seem to poke you. there are some bulb brushes that wont do this, but i'd rather play it safe. fans don't feel like they're poking me in the center of the brush. fans do open up but if you limit the size of the knot and also the loft, you'll get backbone and not as much 'splay.' This essentially gives you more control over the brush. If you do this right, all the lather stays at the top of the brush, which contributes to this brush's exceptional lather release. I love shavemac knots because of their combined scritchy/softness feel. Shavemac D01 is not the softest knot but it hits the spot for me for that combined amount of softness and scritch.

Thanks for the great info. I'm about to order a custom Shavemac Silvertip 22/48 but was curious about the D01 and loft shape options. I did some reading after seeing this thread and it was suggested bulbs are more precise.

Based on the density, backbone, and scritch of my 3 D01s , I also suggest a fan shaped knot. 22/48 is going to be just fine IMO.

I plan on ordering 2 Shavemac's for face lathering :

1. Shavemac 102 D01 3-Band 26 mm/52 mm loft in fan shape
2. Shavemac 234 Cocobolo Wood 3-Band Silvertip 24 mm/ 52 mm loft in bulb shape

I think these 2 will complement each other just fine in order to have variety in my growing brush collection.

I currently have a Shavemac #25 from WCS in 21mm knot and it has a loft of 50mm. It is the silver tip version.

I have a Shavemac 177 in silvertip (essentially the same brush, but different handle a bit) and the 2012 LE Rudy Vey keyhole with 2-band D01 (not 3 band).

You should notice a lot of difference. The hair difference should account for most of that, and tweaking the loft may not be too necessary. (But take the advice of those who have the D01 3-band, though.)

And yes, IMHO fan-shape is best for back-bony brushes like this.
