Shave Facts (according to Godrej)

Here are a few shaving related facts (from Godrej). Enjoy:

Incredible But True

  • There are about 30,000 beard hairs on the face of the average man—the greatest concentration on the chin and upper lip.
  • Hair grows about one millimeter a day.
  • Hair grows faster during the day than at night.
  • The ideal shave angle (razor blade meeting the face) is 28-32 degrees.
  • Hair on the neck grows parallel to the skin.
  • 42% of men report that they have no facial hair.
  • 34% say they have a moustache, 19% with sideburns, 17% have a goatee, 6% have a full beard, and 3% have a soul patch.
  • The average man will have spent 900 hours shaving (the equivalent of 37 1/2 days) between ages 15 and 75.
  • The majority of men, 84%, shave at the sink. Another 15% of men shave in the shower.
  • Men between the ages of 18 and 24 shave an average of four times a week.
  • Men over the age of 35 shave an average of six times a week.
  • The average man begins to shave regularly when he begins to work regularly.
  • The average man spends 10-15 hours a year shaving.
  • The average shave lasts 3 ½ minutes.
For me that last 2 facts are definitely not true. I probably spend ~10 times longer

I would say at LEAST 10 times longer. I shave between 30 - 45 mins pre shave, so I could easily do the yearly average in 2 weeks! I've likely spent more time shaving since I started wet shaving in May then the rest of my life....

Combine these two "facts"

# The average man will have spent 900 hours shaving (the equivalent of 37 1/2 days) between ages 15 and 75.

# The average man spends 10-15 hours a year shaving.

and it would appear that, worldwide, the "average man" lives to be 87 years old.

It also appears that the average man lives about 72 years between the ages of 15 and 75!

From this I assume they're talking about DEs, so...

...or straights.

this seems really scary. Even with a cartridge + goo + one hurried pass, I couldn't get a shave done in less than five minutes...three minutes with a DE is just asking for pain.

Tell me about it...that seems unreal. I believe this 3.5 minutes to be an average across the board with all shavers (cartridge, straight, DE, etc...). However, I think since the bulk of the population is comprised of cartridge shavers (maybe 90+%), then this number is biased towards them.

Also considering that 42% (a good percentage) say they have very little to no stubble (this is according to one of the facts they mentioned), maybe that quick shave is justified .

Thanks for sharing that. I agree with you on the last two points.

I find these facts particularly interesting:

"Men between the ages of 18 and 24 shave an average of four times a week.
Men over the age of 35 shave an average of six times a week."

I'm 30, and when I started DE shaving about two years ago, I would generally shave every other day, and go about 48h on a BBS. Lately, I've been shaving daily. For a while I thought it was because I switched to a straight, and my technique did not allow me close shaves (which was true for a while), but my current shaves are on par with my DE experience, and I need to shave every 24h to maintain my groomed appearance.

Oh yeah, did I also tell you that my back has grown hairier over the last few years? Oh wait, you didn't want to know.... ;)

Apparently, men have a "second" puberty around the end of their twenties, which would explain the hairier days I've been having.

The average age in Canada was 81 years old in 2008 according to the world health organization.

So 87 years old world wide seems a little high.

For me that last 2 facts are definitely not true. I probably spend ~10 times longer [IMG.....That's for SURE !! the last two are based on the average american shaver who uses a can of butane propelled foam, and a plastic 49 cent razor...I would venture to guess the average time a forum member spends on a full shave(prep, lathering, shaving, alum and aftershave/balm,etc.)and clean up,drying of brush, mug and razor is about 20 minutes..

Considering that Godrej is an Indian brand, mightn't it be based on the average Indian shaver?
