Shave Brush project

Hey guys,

I started learning how to turn wood to create shaving brush handles. Over Thanksgiving my dad and I created two handles: one cherry and one Northeastern Ironwood. Here are some pics of the work and the final product. Both handles are treated with polyurethane (5 coats) and have 22mm knots from the Golden Nib (thanks to Tony for the great service). The lighter handle (ironwood) has a best badger knot, and the cherry (smaller darker handle) has a fan shape Finest badger knot. One pic shows the two brushes next to my Savile Row 2824. What do you guys think? What handle shapes would be more comfortable to create handles? Thanks for the input.

Good work there sir. My personal preference for handle shape would be similar to the Semogue 1305, comfortable to hold and grips well.

Thanks for your input guys. I appreciate it. Does anyone have any suggestions about preferred woods to use (olive, birch, etc...)?

Beautiful workmanship!

If that Ironwood (Hornbeam ?) is the same wood I split for my woodstove, it tough stuff!

They both look great!

It is hornbeam. We always just refer to it as ironwood. Extremely dense and burns forever. Great wood for things that need to last, such as tool handles or shave brushes. :thumbup1:

Personally, if I were having you make me one I would like to see a handle design like the one you did in cherry, only done in Pale Moon Ebony.

I don't know where to get it or what it costs, but I think it is a very pretty wood.

Were those your first attempts? Or did you mess up a few first? Either way those are both great looking handles.
